Today, Disney announced their plan to bring the new paid Genie and Lightning Pass systems to the parks. Wondering what will the Genie process will look like for Annual Passholders? Let’s take a look.
Disney Annual Passholders number among Disney’s most loyal fans. With Disney about to begin selling Annual Passes again, many will be curious how to use the new Genie fastpass system along with their AP.
Your Kenny the Pirate writing team is thrilled to have annual passes coming back! Some of our writers have had to buy several regular tickets for multiple trips in the same year. But, I guess there are worse problems to have!
Fastpass Didn’t Return After Pandemic
Many (but not all) of us miss using Disney’s Fastpass plus system. Personally, using the tips from Kenny’s Character Locator site, I had almost never waited in a standby queue before the pandemic.
Now, I find myself constantly in standby queues and I’m definitely not a fan. Yes, even if they move quickly. It’s still a tough sell to wait in a queue for something I’m used to walking right up to.
I (Rebecca) felt a little more understanding when it was plausible that they needed the extra queue space for social distancing. Now, social distancing is essentially a thing of the past at Walt Disney World.
Speculation About Paid Fastpass System
Disney Parks regulars have long suspected that Disney would use the pandemic as an excuse to start charging for fastpasses.
We hoped it would be more similar to the old Disneyland MaxPass system and less like the new Paris a-la-carte system.
How Genie+ works for Passholders
After you have purchased Disney Genie+ you will be able to make your first ride selection. You can start this at 7 am on the day of your visit! At Disneyland, this will take place once you have entered the park.
Lightning Lane is a paid a la carte option so this will be similar for Passholders and Regular Ticket Holders alike.
What are your thoughts about the new Genie Fastpass system? Is it a dream come true or will it haunt your nightmares? Let us know in the comments on Facebook.

Did you say Peter pan looks more expensive than rise or smugglers run or flight of passage? Those are the new rides....

I already pay enough, it's extremely wrong to pay again to go on rides you really already have pain for. They want too much. And the new rides are getting cheaper looks to them. If you compare Peter Pana fabulous ride to a new ride they just don't cut it with me. We pay to fly or drive there. Hotel, meals tickets and now pay more to ride the rides we already paid for. This is just wrong. Walt Disney would never have wanted this. His top executives should go back and watch Walt's Life story. A man and his dream. They are destroying Disney World!

We are older and my husband cannot tolerate more than 6 hours in the parks. We rarely enter the parks before 3:00. I am wondering whether there will be any decent Fast Passes left for us by the time we enter the parks.

As a platinum passholder, I kind of feel like I *already* paid to ride the rides. And yet, they oversell capacity so I have to pay more to jump the queue. Surprise! I know people will pay it. But not me. I’m done forking over more and more for less and less. At some point soon they’ll increase it again because this still won’t be enough…all you who decide to pay again for what you already paid for, enjoy!
Oh and have fun once they get you hooked and then raise the rates. Because you know that's coming...
Personally I've loved the absence of FP+. Even on the busiest days I've been able to ride all the popular rides with fast lines and little wait. FP+ and now this new pay to play scheme just bog it all down for the "lowly" common visitors (who also shell out big bucks just for the privilege of getting in the gate to then wait forever in line.)
