NEW: Extra Magic Hours Change at Disney's Hollywood Studios
A major change has taken place at Disney's Hollywood Studios regarding Extra Magic Hours.
Since the opening of Rise of the Resistance at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, park hours have changed frequently while Disney assesses the crowd levels. It is an immensely popular attraction that draws in many guests.
Usually once a week or every other week we will see the operating hours change. We just recently updated the crowd calendars to reflect the change in park hours for March and April 2020. Disney seems to be getting better about updating many dates at once instead of a few weeks at a time.
The trend has been that the park opens at 7 am. However, they recently switched to 8 am openings now that the busy holiday season is over and everyone becomes acclimated to the process.
Extra Magic Hours
To allow onsite (and good neighbor hotels) guests more time in the parks to enjoy the attractions, Disney offers Extra Magic Hours. It is a nice way to get a few more hours in the park with less crowds.
Extra Magic Hours are offered only on Sundays at Disney's Hollywood Studios. They take place in the mornings; however, that has changed.
They have switched morning Extra Magic Hours to late Extra Magic Hours for every Sunday through August 2020. As a reminder, Kenny's monthly crowd calendar is released 6.5 months prior. We will see September hours come out in the next week or so.
My guess is they will continue opening the park at 8 am or earlier depending on the season and crowds. Then, they can still offer late Extra Magic Hours.
As we know, Rise of the Resistance is not open during Extra Magic Hours. You will be able to enjoy other attractions in the park though!

Going to HS in mid March and was wondering what you might think would be a better ride to try and do at rope drop....smugglers run or SDD? Which one might be the least crowded of the two or do you think they would be equal?

I am going March 6th I got a FP for the Mickey and Minnie train I had to give up my SD FP. Now I am having second thoughts. My family has never ridden SD. Any suggestions?!? I don’t want to wait for 2-3 hrs.

I think evening EMH are great for those of us that can’t tolerate the sun and heat as much.give a little more time to hit attractions we would miss otherwise. Some of us just can’t get there early with or without kids. Love evening EMHs!
Any chance you think they will offer and Early Morning Magic for Star Wars?

I love night EMH so I’m excited about this change! We don’t go to the parks at rope drop. So if you go to morning EMH at HS you cannot get a boarding pass until regular park opening?
There currently is no morning emh at DHS
Switching Morning Extra hours to evening extra hours is horrible for resort guest families that don't like being in the parks late. Morning Extra hours for resort guests are much more useful to those families and this totally eliminates that benefit for them at Hollywood studios. They've figured out how to keep non guests out of the park for the hour for all the other parks when new things open and are very popular. This is very disappointing. I get boarding groups make different. But there should be a way to either not let somebody tap the turnstile if they aren't staying on site or turn off the option in MDE to book a boarding pass since they can obviously tell if you are on site in the system. Definitely, yet another way for Disney to keep chipping away at benefits for staying on site. We have NEVER used PM MH and Always AM MH at least a couple days for our annual trip. This is very disappointing.
How far ahead are the Disneyland hours and crowd calendars available? We are going fir the first time in April.
