Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Opening Delayed

Big Thunder Mountain Closure
A year-long refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad began on January 6, 2025. Work includes moving the tower and replacing some or all of the tracks. The final scene may also be upgraded.

Big Thunder Mountain Delayed
Walt Disney World announced that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen in "Spring 2026". While no official date was given, many Guests hoped that the attraction would open soon.
A new amended notice of commencement was made to extend the expiration date on the permit for the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment.
The permit now expires August 31, 2026. The previous expiration date was March 13, 2026. This extension is a bit disappointing for Guests.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Progress
On a recent trip to Magic Kingdom, we noticed a big push to complete work on the outdoor queue and entrance to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
A new permit was filed for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, extended until August 31, 2026.
Recently, Guests noticed ride vehicle testing along with the large geyser special effect testing. Disney Imagineers promised that effects that have been missing for several years will now be refreshed. The geysers are a great delivery on that promise.
