Internet Trolls Help Snow White set the Record for Lowest Ratings Ever

By now most everyone has probably heard at least something about the negativity surrounding Disney's Live-Action Snow White. And now the internet has collectively weighed in on the ratings.

Live-Action Snow White Controversy

It seems like every misstep that could have possibly been taken was taken for Disney's Live-Action Snow White. Audiences are already vocal about disdain for live-action remakes. And, this is a live-action remake of the Classic that put Disney on the maps in terms of feature-length productions. The original content is rich with history, nostalgia, and magic.

Disney did not tread particularly lightly with this precious content. The studio made decisions that eventually sparked controversy on both sides of the political divide, including the casting of the seven dwarfs and the casting of both leading ladies.

By the time the movie made its debut, it seemed unlikely that it would be successful, even if it ended up being a great film! The buzz was already decidedly stacked against it, and people had already decided they weren't going to like it no matter what.

Now the movie has set an interesting rating. It is currently the lowest-ranked live-action remake ever on IMDB.

In fact, the Live-Action Snow White is also currently among the most poorly rated movies of all time on IMDB. It has 1.5 stars.

Of course, it is unlikely that everyone who is rating the movie actually saw the movie. Last week's reports indicated that Snow White made $87.3 million worldwide with $43 million at the domestic box office. There are currently over 251,000 IMDB ratings. (Based on these earnings, many of you are probably not convinced that 251,000 people have even seen the movie.)

IMDB has a statement on the site that says, "Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title." In other words, something is not quite adding up.

Over 229,000 people have rated it at 1 star. However, more than 6,000 have given it a full 10 stars (the second-highest rating).

This is not to say that there aren't legitimate ratings in the mix. However, the likelihood is that people simply feel strongly enough about this movie based on its reputation to troll it without even bothering to watch it. It is an interesting phenomenon.

I (Katie) can't actually weigh in on whether these ratings are fair and valid. I haven't seen the movie.

This isn't the first time we have seen internet trolls sway the numbers. Trolls took to the ratings when hit TV series Bluey overtook an episode of Breaking Bad for highest rated episode on IMDB. You can read about it HERE.

What Audiences Actually Want

Many moviegoers have long grown weary of the trend of film studios dishing out live-action remakes of beloved animated classics. Fans are hungry for original stories and new content instead of recycled stories that harbor so much nostalgia in their original form. For example, Elemental did surprisingly well after positive word of mouth boosted its slow start.

Based on earnings for 2024, audiences have spoken loudly and clearly. If studios are going to recycle intellectual property, fans would, at the very least, prefer sequels to retellings. They appreciate well-executed, brand-new stories featuring the characters they already know and love. After all, Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and Moana 2 all raked in over a Billion dollars.

Moviegoers also seem to appreciate content telling the fun stories of the lore surrounding toys and games that bring up childhood nostalgia. The success of Mario and Barbie both speak to this.

Wicked

Bringing a stage show like Wicked to the silver screen is also popular. Fans also appreciate when a popular TV series like The Mandalorian or Bluey gets its own movie.

And, of course, bringing a book to life through film remains a popular form of adaptation. That is assuming the movie can do the book at least some justice, of course. We know it is possible to accomplish this feat based on the successful recreation of stories like The Wild Robot.

  1. If the person playing Snow White would have kept her mouth shut about her thoughts on how it should be in a Snow White remake all would probably been OK. No One cares about these new actors political or personal views. You were hired to play a part, play that part, shut up and collect your paycheck.

  2. Horrible movie.
    The casting was ridiculous
The movie is the best Disney movie of all time and Disney ruined everything Walt didn’t make this the best ever.
    Casting is the key!!!!
