With so much negative news surrounding our beloved vacation destination lately, it is lovely to get a spot of good news now and then! One of the things that brighten everyone’s day is announcements of the arrival of new baby animals in Disney World! Disney’s newest zebra and river hog come to mind.

Not only do these little ones delight fans of the animal kingdom, but they are great news for the world! Disney’s conservation efforts have brought numerous baby animals into the world from an array of endangered and threatened species. These births are part of an initiative called the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan.

We have great news! A brand new baby addax has been born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge! She came earlier than expected as a pleasant surprise for the animal care team.

What is an addax, you may ask. An addax is a large antelope specices. They primarily have grayish and white coats.

In the wild, you will find them in the deserts of North Africa. However, the species is critically endangered as these animals have been hunted nearly to extinction for their long-twisting horns. In fact, it is estimated that fewer than 500 of these magnificent animals still exist in the wild.

This makes every member of the species so important. Disney World’s new baby addax represents hope for the future of this vanishing species.

The little one was born to her mother Lavender. She and her mom are doing well and are happily bonding and adjusting to life in their home on the savanna. We do know that the baby is a girl, but we don’t know her name just yet.

This baby Addax is so important since there are fewer than 500 of her species left.

If you are lucky, perhaps you will spot this pair on the savanna on your next visit to Walt Disney World. Let us know if you see them! If you want more fun animal stories be sure to read about a pair of rare twins HERE and a new duiker HERE.
