It is no secret that Orlando International Airport (also known as MCO) has only gotten busier over the past few years. This year it was named one of the 10 busiest airports in the United States.

And it makes total sense! With Disney World, Universal, Legoland, Sea World, and so many other theme parks and attractions, millions of people fly in and out of the airport every year.

With growing demand came an airport expansion. Terminal C recently opened at MCO boasting international gates as well as shopping and dining opportunities. It is definitely a bustling airport, but if you are visiting this week don’t be alarmed by what you may see!

Jet fuel shortages, live fire training exercises, fog, and now weather. There has been a lot of news about the Orlando International Airport lately. Now, departing flights have come to a halt.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, departures to Orlando International are grounded due to thunderstorms. It appears this will stay in effect until 4:15 pm local time.

Dry Spell

The rain may not be welcome for travelers hoping to leave Orlando. However, Disney World and Centra Florida has been under a dry spell as of late. Water taxis servicing Disney Springs are suspended for the time being.

We hope flights resume soon and travelers stay safe in the theme parks and at the airport!

Our American Airlines departure time from PHL was 7:30 pm en route to Orlando. We boarded around 7:00 pm and about 40 minutes later we were told to deplane due to bad weather in Miami. Flights bound for Miami had been re-routed to Orlando. We were permitted to re-board around 9:30 pm and took off around 10:00 pm. We arrived in Orlando a little after midnight and could not get to the gate because there was plane there. The crew had left. Our pilot tried to get someone to move the plane to no avail. He even tried to have the plane towed. No crew available. Finally, minutes after 3:00 am we were able to park at a different gate....It seemed they were able to move another plane. We were on the tarmac for three hours. I agree with another commenter (Aaron) that this was poor scheduling and poor gate management.

I flew out of MCO with a proposed departure Monday the 19th at 645pm. Sadly this didn't occur and it wasn't for weather.

American let a 777 sit in the gate secured for 3 hours and forced a A321 to sit on the tarmac for over a hour waiting for a gate to open.

American could have tugged that 777 out to bulk aircraft ramp or out of the way to deplane, board and take off on our flight but failed to do this.

We boarded nearly 2 hours late and went Doors up at 805pm only to sit due to lightning within 5. At 851pm the captain came on to say we're deplaning since the coolant system was malfunctioning and the cabin temp was going to Reach the 90s internally.

Again we waited till 1205am now to depart only to find our connection having been missed and only to arrive into Charlotte with CSA's not wanting to help anyone and just disregard everything.

17 hours later from my original estimated arrival time I finally made it home.

Poor scheduling and gate management were the root cause for this not weather at all.

Parking garages were full at 10 a.m. on Tuesday! They really need to do something about the parking. More garages, please!
