How It Started

The past year has been turbulent between the state of Florida and The Walt Disney Company. Florida passed the Parental Rights in Education Law in 2022.

The Walt Disney Company originally remained quiet surrounding this bill despite pleas from employees and fans for them to take an official stance. Tension built until then-CEO Bob Chapek denounced the bill, but many believed it was too little, too late.

The company has even gone so far to say that they would actively work to get the bill repealed. This caused DeSantis to retaliate in his own public speaking events.

The tension between the company and the state continued worsen as state Republicans repealed the Reedy Creek Improvement Act of 1967. Essentially, the law states that Disney is its own governing body in the two cities and land within Orange and Osceola counties.

Just before the handover took place, Disney tried one last ditch effort to keep as much control out of the state of Florida as possible. Just recently, Disney made an agreement between the district and the parks/resorts.

This new agreement basically gives Disney most of the control of the district and prevents the new oversight board from making any changes to this agreement until 21 years after the death of the last survivor of King Charles III.

As such, DeSantis even ordered a criminal investigation for legal and ethical violations. In addition, he wants to create more hotel taxes and toll roads in the Disney World area, which affect Guests (that's you) by making your vacation even more expensive.

Latest Move

At the press conference yesterday, DeSantis shared that he is planning to announce even more measures against Disney World. The first being his plans to void the contract between the Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board (previously Reedy Creek Improvement District) and Disney World regarding Disney's development rights for many, many years. Now, everything will be passed through the State Legislature.

DeSantis files an amendment to the Florida Senate to dissolve the Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board.

And to solidify this decision, DeSantis files an amendment to CS/SB 1604: Land Use and Development Regulations.

Do you think of this latest move? If it happens, will DeSantis "win" or is this what Disney wants? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. Can you impeach a Governor? That world be the best thing Florida residents could do for the State of Florida and all the Business and the people that live there.

  2. Hmmm.... hes hired Billy cops who were "let go" in other states, he's pushed guns to be everywhere, the single biggest cause of children and teen deaths, he's after the largest revenue producer and employer in the state, but right. He's looking after families in Florida.
    Get the real facts folks!

  3. Our governor has overstepped on this matter. I am disappointed in where he is taking our great state of Florida with his policies.

  4. I believe ron DeSantis is doing the right thing you can't back down to the far left and Disney is not looking out for the children and the families who frequent them they deserve to lose the money take their business to California where it belongs we don't want these actions in our state we needed ron to stand up for the people and that's what he did he is the reason Florida is one of the best run states in the United States nobody should be knocking him

  5. I think a SMART leader would have simply said “Disney is entitled to their opinion, but I’m the governor, elected by the people and I represent their interest”, PERIOD. Seeking retribution is small minded and shows insecurity.

  6. I think the whole thing is stupid. All of this because Disney didn’t agree with his politics? I must’ve missed something somewhere. The people and state of Florida will be the losers. Tourism will be down, unemployment will be high just to name a few. And let’s not speak of all the other mess he’s stirring up. I feel bad for the people of Florida.

  7. We the People, not we Desantis; Florida stop voting "meatheads" into office, I hope you learned your lesson.

  8. De Santis would pull life support on family to charge his phone. He is scaring tourists, He is chasing teachers out of state with his book banning. The story of Rosa Parks and the holocast are history. We learn from our past. My kids read Harry Potter in 5th grade but you have to be in high school to read it in Fl.( Watch out Universal) I have a home in FL and he needs to attend to the insurance crisis and the lack of staffing for the over crowded schools.Instead he fights with Disney, lets anyone carry a concealed weapon with out a permit , background check or training.. If he can't live with Disney what would he do on the world statg?

  9. Think the emotions are clearly coming from Desantis (and I voted for the guy 2x). Have yet to hear additional comments from DIS and/or Iger since the initial disclosure of the transfer… business decisions cannot be emotional (think layoffs). Government decisions cannot be emotional (think war). There needs to be back channel dialogue between both parties to bring down the temperature. This needs to fizzle out. Desantis should talk up his wins because every time he brings up Disney and RCID, it’s rehashing a moment where he does not/ did not look great.

  10. What happened to “corporations are people too”? It was this line of thinking that gave $$$ to Desantis and others. He simply can’t take an L because it’s bad for HIS brand so he fights on. The look publicly is bad; Trump will hammer him for it on stage and Desantis doesn’t have a good reason as to why he continues the fight. Constituents did not necessarily approve of his actions; especially those in Orange and Osceola counties who did not overwhelmingly vote for him. Actions produce unintended consequences. Knowing when to cut bait is a skill Desantis needs to develop before moving on to the National stage.

  11. The govern is wrong and if he makes Disney unobtainable to visitors Florida will suffer Florida residents will have to pick up the slack for lost tourism. DeSantis just cut your loses and let it go. if not be prepared for non residents to stay away Disney is already killing its own business does not need the govern to add to it

  12. I agree with the majority here. I believe the governor should have more important things to do other than fight with the largest employer and taxpayer in the state. This man has ambitions to be president and if that comes to be, then lord help us, if he's willing to keep a vendetta going so long and so ramped up over free speech.

  13. DeSantis needs to admit defeat and move on. If he think this will help him in a run for three presidency, he is sadly mistaken. All the people I've talked to have said that this Disney fiasco he's orchestrated has killed them from voting for him.

  14. How stupid can Disney be by trying to abuse their way out their original stupidity? Disney could have just laid this topic to rest a long time ago, but oftentimes emotions make decisions without any consideration of how the other side will react. DeSantis is only reacting to the stupidity of Disney leadership.

  15. So people or companies don't have a right to free speech in this country. Or is it just the governor's way of showing his follows how much power he would have if he was the second Donald trump

  16. The company has every right to support a political position and should be able to do so without fear of repercussions from the government. It share holders or patrons have a problem with it, they can let their votes or dollars speak for them. The actions of DeSantis are very unethical, un-American, and anti-business. How are these, clearly punitive, actions that see the government punishing free-speech not illegal??

  17. Even if you believe Disney should have "stayed out of it" I can't believe that people feel like the governor's actions are appropriate. Admittedly I don't understand all the ins and outs of the special districts - but this has descended into a public p*ssing competition. Are these current actions doing anything to help his constituents (including Disney) - are they lowering taxes, making things safer, anything that would be considered positive? Or is it just so he can "win" and exert his dominance because he can? It feels like such an abuse of power - I have to believe there are far bigger and more important issues in the state of Florida than this.

  18. Disney is not the loser here. The citizens of Florida and the tourists who love to visit are the losers. DeSantis is willing to shoot himself in the foot to "win" because his ego is that big. Disney was pressured to respond. Yes, there were people who felt they should have stayed out of it, but there were others who were angry that it took them 3 days to respond. It was a no-win situation for them, but in the end, they chose to support their loyal visitors and staff who believed they needed to speak out. If Disney gets more expensive, who does that fall on? If they choose to pull out or shut portions down, who loses? Zero revenue means zero tax dollars, not to mention that people who live there will be affected by the tolls, resorts, and hotels will see a loss, as will restaurants, etc. Why? Because widdle Wonnie got his widdle feelings hurt.

  19. Glad to see Disneg get knocked down a peg or two. They should have stayed out of it. Many employees and fans did not agree with them.

  20. I think the governor is wrong and needs to reverse course. This is becoming ridiculous and needs to end.
