In December, a Chicago man allegedly called in a bomb threat targeting a cruise bound for the Bahamas. Now, according to the United States Attorney General's Office, Middle District of Florida, this man has been charged by indictment with interstate transmission of a threat.
The threat was, fortunately, just that. It was nothing more than a hoax.
Even so, authorities took the threat seriously. The case has been investigated by the FBI. And now it will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law..
Why Did This Happen
Allegedly, the man called in a threat on a recorded line. He threatened harm to the cruise and its passengers.
According to court documents, he stated, "I'm on the cruise boat coming from the Bahamas that left two days ago, and I'm letting you guys know now I have a bomb on the boat and I want to blow it up."
The man allegedly received what he believed to be spam calls from various numbers throughout the day and made the threat out of frustration. Authorities determined that the action was a threat and that he was in Chicago when he made the call, and not on a cruise ship.
Serious Consequences
Even though the threat was a hoax, this man now faces one count of interstate transmission of a threat. As you can imagine, this carries some severe consequences.
Because of one bad decision, he now faces up to 5 years in federal prison. He pleaded not guilty at his hearing earlier this month.
