Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Takes Big Step Toward Opening

After being closed for over a year, we finally have a reopening timeline for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Check out the last final steps towards opening.

Big Thunder Mountain Closure

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed on January 6, 2025 for a HUGE refurbishment. Work includes moving the tower and replacing some or all of the tracks.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Progress

Recently, Guests noticed ride vehicle testing along with the large geyser special effect testing.

Disney Imagineers promised that effects that have been missing for several years will now be refreshed. The geysers are a great delivery on that promise.

Earlier, Walt Disney World promised that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad would reopen in early May 2026. 

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Opening Date

While a specific date is not yet provided, this is great news for Guests with upcoming trips planned. Now, a new permit gives us hope for an actual reopening date.

Disney Imagineering has filed a new permit for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Walt Disney Imagineering filed a permit to "install signage" at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The work will be completed by Design Communications Ltd. This appears to be one of the final permits needed for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to reopen.
