Axolotls have captured the affection of a nation after being popularized by the Minecraft game. The creatures are a type of salamander that usually look like they are smiling contentedly!
In the wild, axolotls are native to Lake Xochimilco in Mexico. Unfortunately, they have become critically endangered.
However, you do not have to visit Lake Xochimilco, nor do you have to search for a pink stair to see one. If you want to see axolotls in real life, you can visit them in Walt Disney World!
Axolotls in Disney World

Walt Disney World has axolotl residents living at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. They are part of Disney’s Conservation Initiative and the species survival program.
The Axolotls in Walt Disney World are under fantastic care at Rafiki’s Planet Watch. They are available for viewing for the lucky visitors who know where to find them!
How to Find the Axolotls

If you want to see the axolotls in Walt Disney World, you need to catch the Wildlife Express Train. This train will carry passengers on a 7-minute ride from Harambe Station to Rafiki’s Planet Watch.
Once you are there, head to Conservation Station! You will find Amphibian, Reptile and Invertebrate Windows where you can see axolotls and other creatures.
It is important to know that the last train typically heads to Rafiki’s Planet Watch at 4:30. Be sure to take that into consideration if you want to visit, because this attraction does not open and close with the park.

Be sure to check the train schedule so you know when it is avaliable.
While you are there, you can also check out a fun petting zoo called Affection Section. Or, you can even take a drawing class and sketch your own beloved animated Disney character!
