If you travel by air, May 7th is going to be a very important day. Find out what you need to know and do before this day arrives.
May 7th

The day has come when the government will begin to enforce the Real ID. This comes after almost a two-decade delay!
Beginning on May 7th, TSA and other federal agencies will only accept IDs that meet Real ID requirements and state-issued Driver’s license. Travelers can still use an enhanced driver’s license, passport, or passport card. For the full list of accepted IDs read HERE.
Children (those under 18 years of age) do not need to provide ID for domestic air travel but do check with your specific airline for their requirements.
What is a Real ID?

Back in 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act. This was done due to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation. The Department of Homeland Security website states:
“Federal government ‘set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses and identification cards.’”
This Act sets a minimum security standard, as some say it is too easy to get a driver’s license in the United States. Reaching this minimum security standard was no small task, as it took almost 15 years to complete.
What Does This Mean to You?

This may not even be of concern to you, as 81% of domestic air travelers already have a Real ID. You will know that you have a Real ID if you have a star or bear marking in the upper portion of the ID. See the sample image from DHS.gov’s website below:

If you are looking to get a Real ID, you will need to provide:
- Full Legal Name
- Date of Birth
- Social Security Number
- Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence
- Lawful Status
Be sure to check with your state, as some states may require additional requirements.
The Real ID is required for domestic air travel beginning May 7, 2025.
If you don’t have a Real ID by May 7th, you may still be able to travel by air. TSA has shared that this COULD roll out in a phased approach, but also those without the proper ID could face additional screening. You can also provide one of the other approved IDs if you do not have a Real ID.
