It is with heavy hearts that we share that an avid participant of the runDisney community passed away at the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon on Sunday.
Weather Concerns
Last weekend, runners and Disney enthusiasts headed to Disneyland for the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon weekend. This included yoga, Kids Races, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Challenge races and events.
Due to rising temperatures at Disneyland, runDisney made a change to the start time for the Kids Races.
With higher temps, many runDisney participants shared the struggle to complete their races and the added struggle to complete both the 10K and half marathon for the Chills and Thrills Challenge.
Tragedy
An avid runDisney participant, Caleb Graves, had quite the following on Instagram sharing his passion for Disney along with his training for long-distance running. He was 33 years old and has participated in many runDisney events over the past years. Caleb had no pre-existing conditions and had trained for this race weekend.
According to the LA Times, on Sunday, after crossing the half marathon finish line a worker noticed that Caleb was clutching his chest and appeared to be going into cardiac arrest.
Sgt. Matt Sutter, informational officer for the Anaheim Police Department, shares the Anaheim Fire & Rescue teams assisted Caleb at the end of the race course. Caleb was immediately transported to the Anaheim Global Medical Center and was pronounced dead an hour later.
Disneyland Responds
Jessica Good, a Disneyland spokesperson, shares, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our hearts are with Caleb’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
