It is not often that we review non-Disney films, but you will not want to miss this great new family film.
Spy Kids Films
Many may remember the original Spy Kids film that was first released in 2001. Due to the popularity of the first film, subsequent films were later released. Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams was released in 2002 to be closely followed by Spy Kids 3D: Game Over in 2003.
After several years, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World was released in 2011. Many may have thought that the Spy Kids franchise was at an end, but we have great news for you.
The newest Spy Kids film just premiered on Netflix titled Spy Kids: Armageddon. This is the 5th film in the Spy Kids franchise. My family and I (Donna) couldn’t wait to enjoy this newest film mixing up both comedy and espionage.
Overall Theme
The film starts with both mom and dad of the Torres family celebrating their anniversary of “Fireball.” This sets the stage for the thrilling theme of this film. As with previous Spy Kids films, the kids are the real stars of the film, and this newest film is no exception. Both children, Tony and Patty are unaware that their parents are secretly spies.
It isn’t until Tony wins at a card competition and receives the ultimate grand prize of the “High Score” video game grand prize that the plot begins to thicken.
Up to this point, the dad, Terrence Tango, has kept high restrictions on the family’s home devices. The kids sneak at night to download the “High Score” game on the family computer. Not to give away too many spoilers, but the game download is actually a trap.
This unlocks the “Armageddon Code” which is the world’s greatest threat, but thankfully it is only partially unlocked. Every day citizens must play the “High Score” game to perform simple tasks such as unlocking their smart home and driving their smart car.
Both parents, Terrence and Nora, send their kids to their “Safe House.” The “Safe House” does protect their kids, but also equips them basic needs and also the coolest Ninja Warrior training course ever.
As the film continues the family is reunited and must work together to defeat the evil villain.
The Cast
The cast for this new film is perfect. Gino Rodriguez, best known for her appearance on Superstore delivers a great performance as a no-nonsense super spy, but also as a caring mom. Zachary Levi plays the patriarch as Terrence Tango.
While the villain mastermind is portrayed by Billy Magnussen. Many Disney fans may recognize Magnussen as the funny Prince Anders from the live-action Aladdin.
For my family, we were most excited about the young actors. Connor Esterson is great as the ultimate gamer and brother to Everly Carganilla’s character. My family first fell in love with Everly Carganilla in the film “Yes Day.”
Carganilla once again delivered an amazing performance. My kids loved seeing her dominate the ninja spy training course, and also help bond her family together in the end.
Family Friendly
This really is a great film for the entire family. My children loved watching people actually fight in a real-life video game setting. There are a few kissing scenes between the parents, but this is brief and not overdone. The “fighting” scenes are tastefully done and enjoyable for even the youngest family members.
This film is currently available to stream on Netflix and is rated PG. This is a great film to encourage working together as a family and the importance of doing things the honest way.
