Disney’s new Moanoa movie is coming closer to being a reality. Is the latest update even bigger than The Rock?
Live Action Moana Movie
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana is a smash hit animated film about an adventurous teenager who, with help from demigod Maui sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and save her people. And now that story will be told through an entirely different medium as a live-action film.
Audiences have mixed reactions to live-action renditions of animated classics. Many prefer fresh ideas like upcoming movies such as Elemental or Wish to reimaginings of existing stories. Love it or leave it, the live-action Moana is sailing ahead!
What We Know So Far
This live-action Moana film will be produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions. In addition, Jared Bush, a 2016 screenplay writer, is involved in this new project.
However, Auli’i Cravalho, the original actress voicing Moana, announced she will not reprise her original Moana role. You can read her reasoning right here. Her new role could help the movie rise to success! And now, Disney has another announcement to make regarding the film.
Disney Announces a Director
It has come to light that Thomas Kail has been announced as the director for the live-action version of Moana! Of course, he is renowned for his work with Lin-Manuel Miranda directing both Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of the musical sensation Hamilton. He also directed the stage adaptation of Hamilton filmed and released for Disney+ that so many fans have streamed on repeat.
If his creativity and vision can bring Moana some of that Hamilton-esque energy, then this could be great news for movie-goers. Moana is by far one of Disney’s most popular animated films, so it does seem possible that it could fill seats at theaters.
Thomas Kail will direct the live-action Moana movie.
Are you thrilled that Thomas Kail will be in the director’s seat for the live-action version of Moana? Let us know in the comments. As always, feel free to pass the news along to others who would love to read it.

Look if the kids like it then you just have to deal with it. We have to many selfish and Down right bullies who feel the need to slam movie or TV show and.go out of their to bully the actors and try ruin the movie or tvshow because they don't like it. No one is force to go see them. So if you not interested in the movie do see and shut up about you complains because no care what you have to saw we have a right like and Don't like but if you ruin the show for everyone then selfish and entitled human being.

So tired of soulless live action/CGI remakes. It just seems like milking a cash cow with no thought whatsoever. Ride based movies aren't much better *cough*JungleCruise*cough*
I rewatched Lilo & Stitch last night and I just know the live action/CGI version will lack all of the quirky warmth of that masterpiece.
Disney - stop.

I am surprised that someone actually hates one of the famous musicals. But we do all have opinions so that's okay.

Agree that all perspectives are welcome. It is nice when people can tactfully agree to disagree.

Just saw The Little Mermaid live action with my daughter and 3 grandchildren ages 5, 7 and 10. Was okay but somewhat bored and so were the kids. My daughter asked what I thought of it and said I liked original better. She said she thought it was slow moving and I totally agree. Wish I would have known as went to the Movie Tavern and spent $88 on food (not including the tickets) and would have saved the money. Doubt I’ll be seeing Moana.

Thanks for reading and for the candid review. My child wants to see it, but she said she'd prefer to wait for Disney+ since theaters can be expensive.

I am disappointed in this choice for director. We had high hopes for this live action film, but we hated Hamilton. We intentionally asked for this play to be removed from our local Broadway series subscription this last go-around.
