Inclusion at the Disney Parks

The Walt Disney Company aspires to the Keys to the Kingdom.  These are a set of attributes that Cast Members are meant to keep in mind as the most important pieces of the guest experience.

Until September 2020, there were 4 keys. They are Safety, Courtesy, Show, and Efficiency. The first four keys are listed in order of importance. In 2020, the 5th key was added “Inclusion”.  The company aims to reinforce the idea that everyone is welcome at  Disney parks.

We have seen many changes since 2020 to help encourage this 5th Key. These include changes to the classic attraction, Jungle Cruise, and even questionnaires asking about cultural sensitivity at the Disney Parks. Most recently inclusion is added to “it’s a small world” and the removal of certain questionable cultural elements over at EPCOT.

Newly Censored Lyrics

Fantasmic! gives fans 29 minutes of Disney entertainment that combines tons of character performers with a water show and some pyro. This is all to culminate in a story about the Disney villains and their attempt to infiltrate Mickey Mouse’s imagination. And of course, it is all set to an amazing musical score.

The new Fantasmic! show features a new show sequence featuring Disney characters – Mulan, Elsa, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Moana. These characters are featured in heroic moments, as well as new technical enhancements.

A couple of days ago @waltdisneyworldkid caught a new update to the soundtrack of Fantasmic! As the characters from Mulan are center stage the hit song “I’ll Make A Man Out of You” is played. However, this song is a bit different than we remember.

As the video plays the music plays we hear “We must be swift as a coursing river.” All Disney fans know that the next line is “Be a man.” This then leads into the next lyric “With the force of a great typhoon”. After this line it is to be followed with “Be a man.” After each of these lyrics “Be a man” is removed and simply has the musical accompaniment.

Disney has not made an official announcement of this change. It is interesting that these lyrics have now been removed to such an important song for this animated classic.

“Be a man” is now removed from the soundtrack as characters from Mulan appear during Fantasmic!.
