We all hope our Disney vacation planning goes off without a hitch once we get into the parks. But, what happens when rides don’t open? One popular attraction has not opened yet at Magic Kingdom.
Attraction Closures
No one likes to see an attraction closed during their visit to the Most Magical Place on Earth. Maybe it’s the only day you will be at that park and now you can’t ride your favorite ride. Closures can derail even the best plans, and sometimes they can be downright disappointing to deal with.
Disney World rides closed all the time. Severe weather, mechanical or technical malfunctions, and Guests doing the wrong thing can all shut an attraction down. Oftentimes, the ride reopens when the weather passes or the issue gets fixed. However, sometimes it can also lead to a multi-day closure.
A Rough Morning
The wildest ride in the wilderness is having a rough morning. Kenny the Pirate is at Magic Kingdom today and spending his day in Frontierland. In honor of his mother, he plans to ride Splash Mountain over and over today! You can follow along on Facebook, Twitter, and our KtP Crew.
While in the area and being on the My Disney Experience app often this morning (July 13), he shared that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has not opened yet today. Sure enough, the MDE app shows it is temporarily closed.

We are unsure why the ride is closed or when it may reopen. If you are in the park today, be sure to check wait times often. If you catch it right when it reopens hopefully you can ride without a long wait!
What to ride instead
Sometimes it can be hard to think on your feet when you find out a ride is closed. We suggest taking a look around you and see what you could ride instead.
If you purchased Genie+ and selected a return time for Big Thunder this morning it should cover to a Multiple Experience. Some attractions are excluded, but you could ride another attraction with a longer wait or hope Big Thunder opens sometime today.
Nearby attractions include Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, the Liberty Square Riverboat, or Hall of Presidents. Maybe a snack or meal sounds good? Try Pecos Bill!
