Disney quietly shares a statement regarding Florida passing new law

You may be wondering why Disney has been so quiet regarding the new law passed by Florida. They have since shared a statement providing hope for the future of the district.

Fight with Florida

The state of Florida and Disney World have been in a heated match the last several weeks over House Bill 1557 - also called the Parental Rights in Education. You can read more about this in our story HERE.

The tension between the company and the state continue to get worse as state Republicans looked to repeal the Reedy Creek Improvement Act of 1967. Essentially, the law states that Disney is its own governing body in the two cities and land within Orange and Osceola counties.

They can make their own laws, zone their own land, and essentially do whatever they want within those limits. By stripping the company of those abilities, Disney would be regulated by Orange and Osceola Counties. Emergency services would now be responsible for calls on Disney property. Disney would also have to seek approval for new attractions, restaurants, and hotels.

Both the Florida Senate and House met last week and both voted on the bill to dissolve the Reedy Creek district. Then, it went to the Ron DeSantis's desk, and he signed it into law. Shortly after, Disney stock dipped the lowest it's been in a year.

There is no doubt Florida rushed to pass this bill. According to the Miami Herald, in doing so they failed to notice a provision in state law that says the state could not do what legislators were doing - unless the district's bond debt was paid off.

Disney, however, noticed and quietly sent a note to its investors to show that it was confident the Legislature's attempt to dissolve the special taxing district operating the 39-square mile parcel it owned in two counties violated the "pledge" the state made when it enacted the district in 1967, and therefore was not legal.

The result, Disney told its investors, is that it would continue to go about business as usual.

This is the only official statement has shared. You can find it in its entirety HERE.

In short, Disney's bond debt must be paid off before Florida legislators can attempt to dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District. We will continue to see how this plays out in the future.

  1. Just out of curiosity, ever heard of libs of TikTok? I would not have thought it was either before seeing some of the videos.

  2. Peter, us with young children don’t want teachers teaching anything that is not on their curriculum. Math, English history . De Santis is doing what Parents want him to do… protect their children.

  3. Please provide the name of the school, or at a minimum the district, where your spouse teaches so this can be verified.

  4. Wrong. As the spouse of a first grade elementary teacher it is in the curriculum and teachers are being told they need to teach it. It covers everything you say they aren't teaching.

  5. But the whole point is they ARE NOT TEACHING OR DISCUSSING THESE THINGS with the children. . DeSantis started this as an election year ploy to stir up his base. The man is pure evil.

  6. Please clear the room of dogma and sophism.
The 1967 Reedy Creek agreement wasn't lawful because it violated the United States Constitution of "debt slavery" in "perpetuity" to citizens of Florida. Furthermore the "non binding contract" violated 1917 Clayton Anti Trust Act along with countless other laws. Disney, like in the movies, was enjoying a wonderful fantasy, and now it's over.

  7. They are not stop listening to Fox News Give me example of them teaching the kids I guess it will be the same examples of rigged elections If you live in orange or Osceola then dissolve it but pay the debt I think you won't want to do the latter

  8. I’m calling BS here Janet. Pre K thru 3rd grade are not killing themselves. Anyone that wants to talk sex to a pre k thru 3rd grade has a serious problem and maybe shouldn’t be teaching. The older kids may need some help in these matters but not the babies.

  9. I think anybody who encourages educators to discuss ANY sexual issue with a grade school child is on a slippery slope. Firstly, these educators are not trained to counsel anyone on sex....period. Disney which owes its existence to families with children needs to be mindful where their bread is buttered. Inclusion is fine but bending the majority to fit a small minority may play out to be bad business. The stockholders of Disney need to make it perfectly clear that management and employees need to be focused on their fiduciary duty to the shareholders.

  10. First of all, no one was going to be teaching life changing decisions to young children, they were not going to be taught gender decisions, trans, sexual stuff. If you believe that or that it is already being done, then you need to do some research or change the channel. What is being considered to add to curriculum for k-3 in the United States is emotional & social support, which is definitely important to teach. And if you don't think so, talk to children who are killing themselves because they are bullied, or the child "cutting" themselves because they have feelings they don't understand. These subjects are more important than R,W,A.

  11. Exactly, it is not!! What is to be added to curriculums in the United States for k-4 is emotionally and social support, nothing to do with sex.

  12. So Peter, where are you exactly from? How long have you lived in Florida ( If you do?), And lastly, why do you think DeSantis has done nothing for the Citizens of the Great State of Florida?

  13. You are correct Sam. DeSantis is a real piece of work you guys should get rid of him. And as the article says he can't do this. However I live in Tennessee and Lee is just as bad as
he's just quieter about his cruelty to the poor. Check this out he just passed the law that says you cannot appeal eviction unless you have one year's rent.

  14. I am an elementary teacher in Florida. Let me tell you. We don't have time, nor the energy to spend our day discussing these issues with students. We have too many standards to cover and too little resources, to let this occupy our teaching time. It boggles my mind that this even became a political issue.

  15. Disney can leave and take the money elsewhere as well as all the other venues who rely on Disney attractions what will the governor do with a park he cannot run???

  16. So has this really happen in life? Is this really being taught to kids in Florida schools. If so let me know where. I live in Florida. And have yet to here thar certain school or teacher was doing this where?

  17. Show me where this subject is being taught in schools in the state of Florida. Then we can talk about. Where where is it be taught???

  18. With the Federal money he took during the pandemic with he sit on a billion dollars. That's what the debt would cost. Or just go up on Florida taxes. Make the poor people pay it as usual.

  19. Kind of like the left that is running down this country. Don’t be foolish. Don’t you the right to oversee what they’re teaching your young children. Wake up people

  20. The reason Disney stock dipped is because of their position on talking trans garbage to little kids like a big group of pedos. Disney need to realize who pays their bills. That is the reason the stock fell. People don’t want Disney grooming their kids. Nice try though. Liberal journalists are all the same.

  21. I enjoy reading the comments. What I really dislike ( and I mean really dislike ) is having to look at that big ugly picture of our so called Governor, each time I open up the emails. Any chance you can put a BIG red circle, with a line through it, on that disgusting picture !

  22. Oh yeh, because our current President is amazing! That’s the joke. It’s so sad that reason and common sense has left America.

  23. I agree!!! Might as well start letting them smoke pot at 2. I mean it’s legal. Shame on people trying to make kids grow up before they need to. The world is hard enough as an adult. Maybe our efforts would be better with anti-bullying for kids who are different rather than indoctrination.

  24. Please read it will help you grow as a person and hate less. The bill is about parental rights for kids in vp3-2nd grade so no one is talking about ANY sexual preferences to very young kids. You say under age 21 - big difference and totally not comparing apples to apples. Oh and by the way - no preferences are to be discussed which means ANY. So when some trans teacher wants to tell a 6 year old that the doctor got it wrong about his/her sex when she was born they won’t be allowed to do so. I thing that’s a good thing. Mixing actual science with someone’s preference is confusing to little kids (who just want to play and color and learn their numbers etc) not to mention the sheer fact that you are dummying down our future generations to actual science.

  25. Did you read the bill MarMar? If you did you would understand that it’s a PARENTAL rights bill. So our Governor is responding to the majority of his constituents who want to parent their kids the way they seem fit without the schools and teachers trying to indoctrinate our young children. Before you speak try reading

  26. You are a joke just like DeSantis is. He is doing nothing for the people of Florida he just wants to be president of the United States all his new laws are going to be shot down by the courts . Do you really want a governor that's threatening anyone and then uses his power to punish anyone that does see things the way he does. First it's illegal. He should be removed from office

  27. You are hurling insults toward a man who has young children and only wants to protect them. Referring to the bill.. it isn’t necessary to bring adult content to young children. While I do agree dissolving the Reedy Creek District wasn’t well thought out I have enough foresight to see he did it to make a statement that parents are to raise their kids not anyone else. I have kids under 8 so I thank our Governor for trying to protect our children at all costs. It’s unfortunate that people like yourself so full of hate gets to dictate what our children future will be. I am LBGQT friendly and will always speak truth to my kids if they have questions. I will never accept a school shoving “be whatever gender you want” down peoples throats. Stay out of it Disney. Do what you do best. Entertainment.

  28. I think this is hilarious, touche Disney. Now to just get rid of DeSantis and his chump following cronies... the world will be a better place.

  29. Disney and all other companies should mind their own business and stay out of politics and our children’s education. Disney should know better than to unleash sexual diversity in their amusement park, films, and other forms of entertainment specifically geared to young children. Children should not be subjected to Mickey and Mike or Minnie and Daisy or to Aladdin who is now magically Alina but with intact genitalia and is allowed to use the ladies bathroom.
It is the right and responsibility of parents to teach their children about sex not companies and public schools pushing a liberal agenda. That is the law that Gov. DeSantis signed to protect our children from being subjected to things they are too young to understand.

  30. ones with all of these crazy suppressing laws!! It’s so apparent that it’s almost comical!! He gives a new meaning to the term simpleton!

  31. So should they also keep their donations to themselves??? I mean they are the single largest employer in our state as well as the entity who makes the largest annual donations to our politicians. So are they NOT supposed to have an opinion??? Stfu! Their opinion has NO bearing on the ignorant laws this Wanna-be Mini-Trump is formulating. Desantis is a lawyer and should know that it’s ILLEGAL to pass laws solely on a retaliatory basis! The ONLY one in this scenario to blame is our so called “Emperor” who just got caught without his clothes! Should this law stand, the people of Osceola and Orange counties will be the only ones paying for it. Not Disney. Desantis being butt hurt is not a legitimate reason to do what he has done! This man is a detriment to our state! God forbid he ever becomes President!

  32. Why is everyone ignoring the real issue here? This has nothing to do with a law that was passed that Disney didn't like. It has everything to do with Disney essentially saying they will buy whatever politicians they need to to get a bill that was lawfully passed repealed. Why are we as Americans tolerating the fact that our government is not ours anymore but is sold to the highest bidder at that particular moment? We have let our politicians sell us out to businesses and we should be angry about that. But, like any good fraudster, misdirection is key to any scam. Look at what the right hand is doing and ignore the left hand removing your voice in your government. I love the idea of Disney but I cannot be a part of any company that openly threatens a standing government with give us what we want or we will just buy the right number of politicians to give it to us. They are one, in a long line, that has stolen our government and I want it back. Do not be misdirected anymore, I implore you, pay attention to both sides selling us out and creating a division in this country to ultimately get what they want, slaves and power.

  33. Except it won't increase local tax payer taxes. It will however, FINALLY make disney pay their fair share and be on an equitable playing field for business. The only increases will be disney ticket prices as they have to cover the large financial investment they will be making each year to Orange/Osceola counties.

  34. Weird, because I am also an expert in child psychology, with a 25 year practice, and you couldn't be more incorrect, even if you parrotted CNN talking points. The Parental Rights in Education bill was about exactly that. Parental rights. No one is stopping a child from talking about themselves. What it is doing is stopping these perverted & mentally ill potential groomers from pushing their Alphabet beliefs on innocent children.

  35. I think they are both in the wrong. Disney really needed to stay out of this, plus we all learned about puberty at 9-10 years old. However, Ron DeSantis should have never messed with a contract/deal. Parents have a say in their children’s lives, which mean if parents want their children to learn about this stuff, they can sign off on it, but do not shove it down their throats. I also see no harm in little boys wearing princess dresses either. Nothing magical than seeing families happy. Once upon a time, women wearing pants was frowned upon. Come on People… let children be children. DRESS UP!!

  36. Funny how no of you are stopping straight relationships in kids under 21. If you really felt the way you do, you wouldn't want them making that decision no matter what their sexual orientation. Just more bigotry.

  37. It is not the government’s job to teach any type of sex/sexual orientation to any young child. (This is for K-3, NOT K-12!) At this age it is the parent’s job to explain these differences - if they decide to not discuss it, not your business. Each parent knows his/her child & whether they are mature enough to understand what is being taught. If the woke groups cannot help themselves & decide to get involved in children’s lives who are not related to them & force their beliefs on others, at least make it optional with parental consent so parents know what is going on in the classroom. Teach your child as you want, but is wrong to talk down to people who disagree with you about just because you have a background in child psychology. If you look at the history of psychology they have changed stances/beliefs on issues throughout the years - some of their former expert beliefs are rather scary! How about teaching respect & tolerance for everyone no matter how different they may seem - no need to cover sexual identity in detail. Thank goodness my kids are grown.

  38. Disney tried to stay out of the matter, but it's employees forced management into it. My thought is that wether you agree with the State or not, parents should do their job at home and instill the values and morals they want their kids to have (no matter what the school is teaching). Parents need to parent! Disney should have stayed out of the matter all together.

My question is how will all the people supporting the dissolving of the RCID react when they realize their county taxes will be getting a hike to support the extra services they have to take over that Disney and RCID we're paying for.

  39. Open minded parent here, as well as child psychology expert. Children begin identity development, including gender identity, between ages 3-5. And brain development continues through around age 25. Child and adolescent suicide is at the highest rates ever. And I assure you it isn’t because of these foolish new words that have been given new names and definitions. And it certainly isn’t teachers, who don’t teach and don’t want to teach sex ed. They do, however, want to create safe spaces for all students to learn and ask questions and talk about their lives, even if there life doesn’t fit your mom + dad absurd outdated model. These authoritarian moves fly in the face of science and compassion and, ironically, Christian values. And they cause actual harm to children. All this for what? Because you are too afraid your values can’t stand up to encountering people who are different. Enjoy it while you can, the demographics in the US are changing rapidly. And eventually your 25 year old viewpoints based on 200 year old beliefs will soon go too, thankfully.

  40. I wonder how much these children learn from friends or their families ? Not all they learn is in a classroom . They get so much information from outside of the classroom. There’s only one reason this dictator is doing this.

  41. He's a Trump person and wants the VP position if Trump runs again
People should realize that he's not looking out the people BUT HIMSELF

  42. Your putting logic into the equation love it. No matter how you believe Disney has NO PLACE in our state business. Doesn’t matter if you like or hate Our Governor. Your correct kids are not developed enough at such young age to make life changing decisions.

  43. I think Disney should keep their opinions out of the state’s government . Disney has no say in how the parents of this state want their children to be educated. Sometimes places like Disney get to big for their britches and need to back off and do what they do entertain not govern. You give companies like them an inch they take miles and miles . Had enough Disney……

  44. Are you open minded parents aware that the brain is not developed until 18 to 21 years of age? Do you really think it's safe to allow your children to make life choices before they can consider the consequences of their actions? You wouldn't allow them to drink alcohol, but will allow them to make choices when they don't fully understand what they're feeling? " People like you make the world a horrible place".

  45. Parents rights? Really? This has to do with a bully who doesn’t like when people disagree. Gosh forbid you have a child who is gay. Or Tran. Or needs love from their open minded parents. People like you make the world a horrible place.

  46. If I have to be “ nice “ I guess I can’t comment on my my real thoughts about this guy who thinks he walks on water.

  47. I think Ron DeSantis is unbelievable and because a huge corporation does not agree with his ridiculous policies he decides to punish them. But no worries because with math books he and his team won’t be able to count the cost that this will have on his precious kindgdom. What a silly silly man.

  48. Yes. Of course disney lawyers would find something. Never fear the loud lion. Watch out for the quiet snake.
