A Bit of Bad News for Shrek Fans

Shrek has amassed a multi-generational fanbase in its nearly 25-year run. If you are a Shrek fan and are looking forward to more from the franchise, we have some disappointing news for you.

It is hard to believe it has been nearly 25 years since audiences first wandered into Shrek's swamp. Over the years, fans have gotten to know all the layers of Shrek (although whether those layers are more like an onion or a parfait is still up for debate).

People have grown to love Shrek and his pals like Fiona, Donkey, and all the other inhabitants of the Kingdom of Far Far Away. The first movie was extremely popular, and it led to multiple sequels.

In fact, a 5th sequel is on the way. Unfortunately, we have some disappointing news for those who are ready to watch Shrek 5.

In summer 2024, DreamWorks Animation announced that Shrek 5 would have a theatrical release. It was initially scheduled for December 23, 2026, just a few months past the 25th anniversary of the film that started it all.

However, with that release date, Shrek 5 would be in for some fierce competition. It would follow December 18, 2026 releases, including: Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Messiah, and Ice Age 6.

Now, Universal has made the decision to adjust the release calendar and delay Shrek 5. Perhaps the logic is to keep it from being overshadowed by potential box office giants that will already have momentum.

Universal is instead setting up Shrek 5 to become a summer blockbuster. The new release date is June 30, 2027. So far, nothing has replaced it for the original release date.

If this plan pans out, the film will be released in the same month as installments from other popular franchises. These include a June 11, 2027, release for How to Train Your Dragon 2 and a June 25, 2027, release for  Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
