Disney+ Now Removes Content Warnings

After an earlier warning, Disney+ has now removed content warnings from several films. See which films were affected along with what this may mean for your Disney+ streaming.

Shortly after Disney+ launched at the end of 2019, we noticed some classic animated films carried content warnings. Certain films like Peter Pan, Dumbo, and Lady and the Tramp had warnings that outdated cultural references and tobacco use are depicted in the film. You can read our original post HERE.

Later, Disney+ added longer warnings to certain films. For example, previous warnings just mentioned that the film is presented as originally created and had tobacco use/outdated cultural depictions.

Disney+ then went a step further in 2021 and removed certain films from the "Kids Profile." Each profile on the account can be edited as a "Kids Profile." You can select the parental controls option which means that the account will have a kid-friendly interface with only content suitable for kids.

Earlier, we shared that Disney will begin a shift in its model to focus on business performance. Part of that shift includes a move away from its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

With this change also comes changes to the content warnings. Previously the content warning (pictured above) was unskippable and played before the film.

The most notable films that were once introduced by such content warnings included: Peter Pan, Dumbo, Jungle Book, Aristocats, and Lady and the Tramp.

Now, instead of these warnings auto-playing before the animated film, the content warnings are now located in the "Details" tab for the movie.

This content warning is now reduced quite a bit simply stating, "This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions."
