If you were a Disney Channel kid and grew up in the era of television before streaming, then this news is for you. Disney is revamping a fan-favorite series. Here is everything we know including which of the original cast members are in! Could this be the revival series that we actually NEED?
Disney Reboots
There is a bit of a love-hate dynamic between Disney fans and remakes of the films and television shows that defined their childhood. While Disney has received a bit of backlash over rebooting its popular animated classics as live-action films, fans generally seem more receptive to reboots and spinoffs that result in a television series.
What is the difference? Perhaps it is because a television series offers opportunities for new stories revolving around favorite characters rather than a retelling of the story we already know and love just the way it is.
Spinoff shows such as DuckTales or Muppets Mayhem have been met with success. And now fans are about to receive what we hope will be another reboot that enhances a series that already holds a place in many hearts and minds, especially if you grew up in the early 2000s.
A NEW Reboot
Disney Channel has already begun teasing the brand new series with photos on social media. An American teen fantasy sitcom is returning to homes across the nation soon! Wizards of Waverly Place will be the next show to receive more stories!
The show told the story of Alex Russo, a girl from a family of wizards. She must compete with her siblings to be the family wizard. Many people consider the Alex Russo role to be what launched actress Selena Gomez‘s career. The series ran for 4 seasons with 106 episodes.
There was also a feature-length movie in 2009 and a reunion episode in 2013.
The reboot will result in a sequel for the series. We have seen Disney accomplish sequel creation with other once-popular shows like That’s So Raven. In fact, the sixth season of Raven’s Home just aired in 2023.
Wizards of Waverly Place is getting a sequel!
Wizards Details
The sequel, called Wizards, is bringing back some of the original cast! Both Selena Gomez and David Henrie will return to the pilot episode to reprise their Alex Russo and Justin Russo roles. Henrie will be a series regular. For now Gomez is slated as a guest star.
Alex Russo has left his wizard powers behind and raised a family of his own. However, his dealings in wizardry are not over yet. He will be taking a new wizard named Billie under his wing. Will the duo be able to pave a bright future for Wizard World?
Selena Gomez will also serve as an executive producer for the series. Gary Marsh, who was one of the forces behind the original Wizards of Waverly Place series, will also be an executive producer. And, Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain) will executive produce and direct the series.
