A Disappointing Experience at EPCOT’s Space 220

A Disappointing Experience at EPCOT’s Space 220

Walt Disney World changes its dining menus from time to time. This is great in some regards to keep guests returning to their favorite dining locations. Unfortunately, not all changes are positive. Find out what has changed and why you may want to rethink your next trip to Space 220.

Since its opening, Space 220 has been one of the hottest Advanced Dining Reservations. Part of the appeal is that it is an immersive dining experience that takes visitors to the Centauri Space Station 220 miles above EPCOT!

The restaurant itself is a theme park attraction featuring a fun virtual elevator ride where Guests watch the Earth shrink away as they ascend into space. Once you “arrive”, you are treated to heavy space theming. Many guests consider it a must-try.

Guests have three options that offer varying menus and price points: bar, lounge, and restaurant. Prices at both the bar and lounge are a la carte and offer limited dining options. The Space 220 Restaurant offers a prix-fixe 2-course meal at lunch and a 3-course meal at dinner.

Advanced dining reservations are highly recommended for both the restaurant and the lounge. Guests may have luck with walk-up reservations about 30 minutes before Space 220 opens for the day. You can also easily join the standby queue to sit at the bar and enjoy drinks along with the limited lounge dining menu.

Disappointing Changes

Previously, my daughter and I (Donna) had a wonderful experience dining at the Space 220 Lounge. We dined on “Flight Bites” and enjoyed a few fun non-alcoholic beverages. The entire experience was wonderful from the blast off to space along with the large variety of non-alcoholic options. Be sure to check out our review of dining at Space 220 with children.

A couple of weeks ago, Space 220 celebrated its second anniversary and added 18 new menu items. Check out the full listing HERE. Unfortunately, our most recent visit to Space 220 was a bit disappointing.

The Milky Way is no longer offered on the menu leaving only two non-alcoholic beverage options including Starship Lemonade and Moon Rocks. There are now only 2 non-alcoholic beverages for guests 21 years and younger as designated by the blue markings. The third option, “Solar Flare Sour”, contains bitters that cause this “non-alcoholic” beverage to still be only for guests 21 years and older.

The Space 220 Lounge menu has changed quite a bit. Our two favorite items Short Rib Sliders and Shrimp Cocktail are no longer offered on the menu. The new “Flight Bites” menu options offered in both the Space 220 Lounge and Bar are far less appetizing at least for my traveling party.

Another disappointing change is that Space 220 trading cards were previously offered with the purchase of a Kid’s Meal or a non-alcoholic beverage option, but this has also changed. These are no longer offered and it does not appear that they will return.

A few favorite “Flight Bites” and non-alcoholic menu changes have been made for Space 220.

Overall Experience

The bartender did offer to make any of the featured drinks without the alcohol, but this seemed a bit daunting for my teenage son. This entire meal offered such a different experience than when we dined last year.

A friendly manager offered to take our photo before exiting “Space” and asked us about our experience. When I shared my concerns, she admitted that we were not the first to have these feelings. We are hopeful that with other guests sharing their concerns a few family favorite menu items and trading cards may return.

Have you dined at Space 220? Do you plan to return or is it a one-and-done experience? What do you think of the changing menu options? Share your thoughts with us and share this review with a fellow Disney foodie.

I was disappointed, because I felt the service was rushed. And the out of space theme was not very exciting. Also my food was way too salty. I love Disney dinning but, I have no plans to ever return to Space 220.

This was exactly how my son and I had been disappointed when we finally got our coveted seats at the lounge. Nowhere on the Facebook page did they notated they were removing the NA drinks or the trading cards, and my son and I both had built a lot of excitement and anticipation for them. The sliders we had were tasty, but the rest of the appetizers were limiting to children or those with a seafood allergy. I did make a second trip last month with my husband and it was his first time going and he enjoyed the atmosphere as well but at this point unless they bring back more in a drink options, expand the appetizers menu, or bring back the trading cards, there's no real motivation for us to ever go again
