Over the past years, Disney has developed a habit of rebooting animated classics as live-action films. Among the movies that have received the live action reboot makeover are Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Lion King, Aladdin, and Dumbo.

Now, Disney’s beloved classic The Little Mermaid is getting a reboot all its own. Get your calendars ready because we now know the release date for the live-action journey under the sea!

The Film Details

The new twist on The Little Mermaid will bring movie goers a live-action rendition of the story! While few details have been revealed, we do know the film’s cast.

Most notably, Halle Bailey will play Ariel, and Melissa McCarthy will play Ursula. Luca’s Jacob Tremblay will play Flounder.

I (Katie P) am especially excited to see Daveed Diggs as Sebastian as he stole the show for me in Hamilton.

We also know that Rob Marshal is directing. You may have seen other Disney films he has directed like Mary Poppins Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Excitingly, Lin Manual Miranda is collaborating on the film’s music. The film is rumored to include at least some of the music from the animated film, but it is also going to feature all new music.

The Release Date

Recently the release date came to light. According to IMDB, The Little Mermaid will come to theatres on May 26, 2023.

There is no word so far on whether this will be a purely theatrical release or whether it will also involve Disney+. Disney has included its streaming service in several releases as of late. For example, Black Widow dropped in both theatres and the home viewing platform.

Regardless of when and how I experience it, I am excited to see this one. While I typically prefer the animated renditions to the live-action ones, it is fun to see beloved stories told in new ways.
