Rumors of a Massive Refurbishment of Space Mountain
After several lengthy refurbishments at Magic Kingdom, could a big closure now affect Space Mountain?
Magic Kingdom Lengthy Refurbishments
Magic Kingdom just completed two lengthy refurbishments for two popular attractions. The first was for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The attraction first closed on January 6, 2025, and finally reopened on May 3, 2026.
Along with receiving a brand new track and theming elements, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad also offers a lower height restriction for Guests.
Big changes were announced for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin with handheld blasters and video monitors with real-time scoring (unlimited high scores!). Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin closed on August 4, 2025, and it officially reopened on April 8, 2026.
Tomorrowland Closures
This week, a new extended refurbishment started at Magic Kingdom. Last August, Disney Imagineers shared plans to bring a Walt Disney animatronic to this attraction. This will not be the only change to this attraction. Carousel of Progress will soon feature new decades.
To prepare for the next version of this ever-progressing attraction, the Carousel of Progress will be temporarily unavailable beginning July 6, 2026. We expect the attraction to reopen in 2027.
Now, there are rumors that big changes may be coming to Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom.
Space Mountain Rumored Refurbishment
Let's just pretend that the rumor is true. What could be the scope of this refurbishment? Could this be for a whole track replacement, such as the one Disney recently completed at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?
Several rumors are circulating that big changes are coming to Space Mountain.
Or could this be a retheme similar to what we saw at Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets? Maybe this could be a combination of a new track along with a new theme in the attraction and in the queue for this attraction.
While Disney could make an official announcement at any time, Disney typically reserves big announcements for the D23: The Ultimate Fan Event. This is scheduled for August 14-16, 2026.
