Back in 2023, Disney tried out a new Magic Shot that kicked things up a notch. They had been exploring how to use technology to expand these offerings in new and exciting ways.

As part of these efforts, Disney just launched a new Watercolor Magic Shot that turns your photo into a painting while stylistically removing other guests from the background so your friends and family are the focus of the photo. You can see the before picture above and the Magic Shot below.

This is a great option, but it is only offered at select times throughout the day due to the congestion and entertainment at the Cinderella Castle hub.

Disney PhotoPass Patent

A new patent has been granted titled "Crowd Removal and Automatic Focus for Images" to Disney Enterprises Inc. The overall idea of this technology would allow a computer system to partition the different aspects of a photo. Through depth information, an assessment would be made as to who and what is to be included in this photo.

Those items further away would be at risk of being deleted, and those items closer to the "focal cluster" would be assessed to see if they should be included. This could eliminate both people and obstructions in the background.

This would truly be a game changer for Disney Park Guests wanting beautiful family photos minus the crowds and random "photo bombs". While this is still in the patent grant phase, it may be several years before we see this type of technology in the Theme Parks.
