Mother’s Day is a celebration that honors motherhood figures. It originated in the early 20th century by Anna Jarvis in the United States. She organized the first Mother’s Day worship service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Many traditional celebrations of motherhood have existed throughout the world from the time of the Greeks to present day. It is celebrated in different parts of the world on different days throughout the year. For example, it is celebrated the second Sunday in February in Norway, the 10th of May in Mexico and the last Sunday in May in Morocco.

In 1908, the United States Congress rejected a proposal to making it an official holiday. However, in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.
