Disney Reveals the Future of MagicBands

For a stress-free Disney or Universal Studios vacation, let the FREE expert planners at Royal Carriage Vacations take care of every detail including dining reservations, applying discounts, and onboard cruise credit.

We have received quite a bit of information from Walt Disney World regarding their phased reopening of the Disney Parks and Resorts in the upcoming weeks. This morning they shared a wealth of information concerning the new reservation system and included in this informative blurb was the future of MagicBands.

My Disney Experience App

Walt Disney World has shared that Guests who will be visiting during the Park’s phased reopening will need to have an updated version of the My Disney Experience app. We even shared this in our article giving helpful hints to secure Park reservations using the My Disney Experience app.

This morning we received news that the My Disney Experience App may even be replacing the need for Magic Bands in the future.

This is what the Disney shared this morning: “As you begin planning your upcoming visits, we’re also exploring engaging ways for guests to use their mobile tech to experience the magic- particularly now as the use of phones and apps continues to evolve.”

Future of MagicBands

Disney goes on to say, “In 2021, we plan to unveil an innovative new offering as part of the My Disney Experience App that will bring features of a MagicBand to your smart devices, building on the app’s existing digital key feature.

With this new offering on the horizon, we will be retiring our complimentary MagicBand distribution to Disney Resort hotel guests for new reservations with arrivals beginning Jan. 1, 2021.”

Disney Resort hotel guests will continue to have the option to purchase new MagicBands at a discount, and we’ll be introducing even more colors and designs featuring favorite Disney characters in the future. Guests who prefer not to purchase a discounted MagicBand will be able to use the My Disney Expericen app or a Key to the World card during their visit.”

How This Will Affect Us

To all of us who greatly look forward to pick out their families MagicBands and to have the added joy of receiving them in the mail, you are still in luck. The specialty MagicBands will still be avaiable for a discounted purchase for Resort guests as they have been. MagicBands will also still be available for purchase on shopDisney and at Disney retail locations.

The need for MagicBands will not be as necessary with the new My Disney Experience app that will be available in January 2021. Due to this, complimentary FREE MagicBands will no longer be sent to guests staying at Disney Resorts with reservations staring after January 1, 2021.

What do you think of this shift to the use of the My Disney Experience app? Will you still be purchasing the discounted MagicBands for your Disney trips next year? Share your thoughts with us on our Facebook page.

To me, Magic bands was one of the things that made Disney special! We loved using our magic bands. I hope people will always have the choice to use one.

The bands will still work and you can still buy new ones, they just won't be including them in your resort stay.
