Space Mountain is one of the most popular attractions in the Magic Kingdom. Unfortunately, it is not having a great day.

One of the most popular rides at Magic Kingdom is Space Mountain. Located in Tomorrowland, you blast off on a rocket into outer space to a futuristic soundtrack. Recently, we shared HERE that Disney now prohibits loose articles on this attraction.

Here’s a quick history lesson for you. Walt Disney originally came up with the idea for a space themed roller coaster for Disneyland. However, it never came to fruition. When Disney World opened in 1971, there were no thrill rides in the park.

Disney wanted something that would appeal to more people so the concept for a space themed roller coaster came back to life. Space Mountain opened on January 15, 1975, and it has been thrilling Guests ever since!

Rough Day

Unfortunately, Space Mountain is not having a great day. The ride has failed to open today, September 6. Being that it is already so late in the afternoon, we doubt it will open at all.

Lightning Lane availability “sold out” around 1:00 pm even though no one has been able to ride it. When a ride is closed, those Guests with a Lightning Lane are given an “Anytime Experience” that allows them to ride another attraction or continue to wait and ride when it has reopened.

What to do instead

It can be frustrating when your ride of choice is not available on the day of your visit. This can be even worse when you do not have anymore Magic Kingdom days planned into your vacation.

However, there are other options! If you are looking for a thrilling roller coaster, consider heading over to Frontierland and ride Big Thunder Mountain. If you want to stay in Tomorrowland, you cannot go wrong with any of those attractions. A ride on the PeopleMover will give you a glimpse at the Space Mountain attraction if you need your fix!
