One of my (Monica) favorite rides at Magic Kingdom is Space Mountain. Located in Tomorrowland, you blast off on a rocket into outer space to a futuristic soundtrack.

Here’s a quick history lesson for you. Walt Disney originally came up with the idea for a space themed roller coaster for Disneyland. However, it never came to fruition. When Disney World opened in 1971, there were no thrill rides in the park. Disney wanted something that would appeal to more people so the concept for a space themed roller coaster came back to life.

Space Mountain opened on January 15, 1975, and it has been thrilling Guests ever since!

Disney prohibits loose articles

A new sign popped up at the Space Mountain attraction that prohibits loose items. It says:

Hand-held or loose articles, including cell phones and cameras are not permitted while riding. Items must be secured on the person, in vehicle storage pouch, or left with a non-ride.

Another sign next to it has picture of Mickey ears, glasses, and phones explaining that they need to go in the pouch and completely closed.

Hand-held or loose articles, including cell phones and cameras are not permitted while riding. Items must be secured on the person, in vehicle storage pouch, or left with a non-ride.

Why the new signage?

We have not heard of any recent incidents or accidents that may cause Disney to prohibit loose items on Space Mountain. However, it’s not too big of a stretch to assume that maybe many items have fallen out of the ride vehicles.

This could contribute to more lost and found reports or even injuries of other Guests. Multiple ride vehicles are moving on the tracks at any given moment, so it’s possible loose items were falling out and hitting others.

At this time, we have not see this sign posted at any other attraction on Disney World property. We will keep you posted if we do.

What do you think of this new sign? Do you always secure your items? Let us know in the comments below and on Facebook.

Having ridden Space Mountain more times than I can count, well fitting prescription glasses haven't been an issue. I have seen people who actually put their sunglasses up on their heads and get annoyed when they were lost! Possibly a sign limiting the ride to those with common sense might be more helpful? How about the harassment and cutting in line? Let's stop that. We haven't returned to Disney for 15 years because of the amount of undesirable guests allowed to ruin the experience for others. We used to visit many times a year but Disney has become a cesspool. Getting hit by flying articles is the least of their problems! GO UNIVERSAL STUDIO'S!!!
