Oddly timed closures now taking place for one Magic Kingdom ride

For a stress-free Disney or Universal Studios vacation, let the FREE expert planners at Royal Carriage Vacations take care of every detail including dining reservations, applying discounts, and onboard cruise credit.

We noticed some really oddly-timed closures for this one Magic Kingdom ride. But, why?

Attraction Closures

It is not uncommon for an attraction to experience a lot of downtime throughout the course of the day. Sometimes it’s a technical issue that needs resolved or the weather is forcing rides to close. We frequently see bad weather close almost all the outdoor attractions at all four theme parks.

Whatever the reasoning is, it can make a more stressful day at the Magic Kingdom if a headliner attraction is not loading Guests. While the attraction in question is not necessarily a “headliner”, it is still important to make note of the weird operating hours.

Would you believe me if I told you Disney has four rides throughout its parks that are the same ride? And three of them are in the same park!

  • Dumbo
  • Astro Orbiter
  • Magic Carpets of Aladdin
  • TriceraTop Spin

Located in Adventureland in Magic Kingdom, Magic Carpets of Aladdin ride takes the spinner concept but has you board a flying carpet instead of an elephant or rocket ship or dinosaur. Watch out for the camel, it spits!

Weird Closures

We are not sure if the closures are heat related or Disney is just trying to save money on staffing during an “off season”, but Magic Carpets of Aladdin is not open all day like you may think.

Here is the data for this past week (May 15-21, 2023)

  • Monday: open 9:00 am 10:30 am, closed from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm, open 8:00 pm to park close
  • Tuesday: open 9:00 am 6:30 pm, closed from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, open 8:30 pm to park close
  • Wednesday: open 9:00 am 10:15 am, closed from 10:15 am to 8:00 pm, open 8:00 pm to park close
  • Thursday: closed all day until 8:00 pm, open 8:00 pm to park close
  • Friday: closed all day until 8:00 pm, open 8:00 pm to park close
  • Saturday: closed all day until 8:30 pm, open 8:30 pm to park close
  • Sunday: closed all day until 8:45 pm, open 8:00 pm to park close

We are unsure when these hours will go back to normal, but if we had to guess it will likely pick back up towards the end of this week. Memorial Day weekend is this coming weekend, and summer crowds will start to roll in this summer.

It's not scheduled, as there are still lightning lanes available during the closures. The CMs are still at the ride all day saying it's closed (for those not using the app to see it listed as temporarily closed)

Looking at the times it appears to be both mechanical and staffing. The staffing is due to several issues. It is in between time for college students. There are not enough workers for the entire Olando area entertainment business. The senior population has returned North which accounts for a higher number of part time workers during the winter months. Many people prefer to live off the system rather than work. I also believe that Disney has pretty strict hiring freeze going on as well right now.
