Our minds are blown. Magic Kingdom is getting an entirely new expansion.

D23 Weekend

D23 just blew everyone’s minds. We all predicted there would be updates for Animal Kingdom (and there are HUGE ones). But none of us predicted what is up Disney’s sleeves for the Magic Kingdom.

That’s right. Magic Kingdom is getting an expansion. The D23 team said that this expansion came from imagining what could lie beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

One of the things that could lie beyond Big Thunder Mountain is Coco. This potential expansion will be set in Santa Cecilia, and the inhabitants will be celebrating Día de Muertos.

It is amazing that instead of a ride retheme in Mexico in Epcot Coco could be getting an entire area of the park!

Beyond Big Thunder Mountain, we could also have another amazing new place to visit. Guests will be able to enter the world of Encanto! This was alluded to earlier this year, and it looks like it is coming true!

It seems as if fans are going to get to talk about Bruno in the parks. Maybe we will even find him there!

Last but not least, one of the things that could lie beyond Big Thunder Mountain is a Villains Land. WHAT! It would be amazing to be able to take a walk on the bad side, wouldn’t it?

Concept Art

Disney had concept art to share with us, and it looks just magical. It will be awesome to see what develops!

Wow. This is phenomenal news. Be sure to follow along with us at the Kenny the Pirate writing team because details are sure to emerge about each of the places that could be popping up in this magical new world beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad!

  1. This is dishonest reporting. They did not announce an expansion. They were spitballing on stage. These aren’t actual plans and so they are not actual announcements.

    • Every idea starts off as a thought and morphs into a discussion that turns into a concept. Perhaps the concept will get scrapped. However, it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

  2. Meanwhile, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios barely have a half dozen worthwhile rides when you combine both parks — and they are talking about yet another new ride for Magic Kingdom after a whole new FantasyLand AND Tron. Yeah, sure — might as well close those other 2 parks.

  3. Concept art is cheap. Westcot? Discovery Bay? Western River Expedition?

We’re a gullible lot. The only thing Disney says that I believe is, “We’re raising prices.”

  4. That’s not what they said. They’re still in the “What If” phase. It may never happen. This is just to have people talk about Disney instead of Epic Universe.

    • It is true that many Disney fans still have lingering feelings of visions that were presented and then snatched away (Play Pavillion and Mary Poppins, for example). However, it is heartening to know that they do have visions of expanding what is already there and increasing capacity and offerings at some point vs. continuing the trend of merely updating what already exists. Perhaps it will get scrapped, but the concept art didn’t create itself. Disney has invested money into the generation of these ideas. Perhaps, as you said, there was an element of competition with Epic Universe to drive that investment. Then again, there are many Disney fans out there who do not think Disney views Universal’s new gate as a threat, just as something else to draw people to the same geographic area.

    • Maybe so. We are still remembering things like a Mary Poppins attraction and Spaceship Earth Updates and the Play Pavillion that got scrapped. Let’s hope Disney follows through on these and the updates to AK too.
