Disney’s Live Action Film Hercules Confirms New Director

The live action film of Disney’s Hercules has found its director, and he is no stranger to Disney! Read on to learn more of this exciting announcement.

Guy Ritchie is an English film director, producer, screenwriter and businessman. His work includes Snatch, two Sherlock Holmes films, and several others. His first experience with the Disney company was being director of a fan favorite beloved Disney animated film from 1992.

Ritchie is best known for his work in Disney’s Aladdin live action film that was released in 2019 featuring Naomi Scott, Mena Massoud and Will Smith. The film brought in $1.051 billion from box office sales.

The live action Hercules film will be produced by AGBO, the production company run by Avengers: Endgame directors Joe & Anthony Russo. Currently the studio is in the process of hiring additional writers after Dave Callaham has written the first draft.

At the moment of this announcement, there has been no casting for main roles.

Hercules: Disney’s Animated Film

The original animated Hercules film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker and was released in theatres on June 13, 1997. The film is a musical retelling of Hercules the god and Greek mythology. Its musical score was composed by legendary Alan Menken. Tate Donovan voices Hercules alongside Susan Egan who plays Hercules’s love interest, Megara.

Disney’s animated film Hercules film brought in $252 million at the box office worldwide in 1997. As Disney’s next live action film, it will join Disney predecessors including 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast,” 1992’s “Aladdin,” 1994’s “The Lion King,” and 2020’s, “Mulan,” which have all been remade as live-action films for the Disney company.

The animated film did not do well. I am surprised they are making this into a live action film. Disney must be running out of material.
