Guests who took a ride on Kilimanjaro Safaris were in for a surprise. An evacuation led to a walk on the wild side!
Kilimanjaro Safaris
Kilimanjaro Safaris is a staple at Animal Kingdom. The experience takes guests on an 18 minute tour of the Harambe Wildlife Reserve.
Here, guests can encounter a variety of animals. During the ride, they might spot lions, giraffes, zebras, hippos, warthogs, rhinos, giraffes, okapi, and dozens of other species of threatened and endangered animals.
Part of the beauty of the attraction is that no two tours are every exactly alike! The time of day, weather, and unpredictable animal behaviors can affect what you see each time.
An Unexpected Stop
Of course, sometimes a tour that brings you up close and personal with nature takes unexpected twists and turns that extend the duration a bit. One such derailment happened to guests on Friday, February 11, 2022 when several of their open air vehicles stopped without explanation.
In fact, the delay lasted nearly 40 minutes. Fortunately, many of the guests had a nice view of the animals while they waited. Even so, some guests grew weary of waiting after such a long time.
The reason for the delay
Delays like this can happen for a number of reasons. For example, sometimes an animal walks on the path of the vehicles and will not budge, resulting in a waiting game.
However, in this case the stop was the result of something a little different! This particular adventure became stalled because a ride vehicle had a wheel malfunction, leaving it unable to complete the journey. Vehicles behind it could not move either.
An Evacuation!
After the long period of waiting, guests affected by the broken ride vehicle were evacuated. Cast Members brought ladders to help the guests climb from the vehicles and safely reach the ground.
Guests headed towards a backstage area, separated from the wildlife on the reserve. One guest, Tiktok user @purely_katelin, filmed a walk-off video! You can get a behind-the-scenes look below.
It looks like it was quite a long walk for the affected guests. Guests involved reportedly received recovery passes to use the Lightning Lane at another attraction.

In January a whole herd of wildebeests crossed the road, and they were not in a hurry. But we called it an experience!
