It’s a special time at Animal Kingdom! That’s because the park has welcomed another baby. Recent baby news includes a new addax, a yellow-backed duiker, and a new mandrill.

Not only do these little ones delight fans of the animal kingdom, but they are great news for the world! Disney’s conservation efforts have brought numerous baby animals into the world from an array of endangered and threatened species. These births are part of an initiative called the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan.

Corra, an African elephant calf, joins Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

All About Corra

Corra is the first African elephant to be born at Animal Kingdom since 2016! She was born just a few days ago on December 13, 2023 to new mom, Nadirah. Nadirah herself was born at the theme park in 2005. Talk about the circle of life!

Nadirah’s sister, Luna, was there to guide her and help her as a first-time mom. Soon, Corra will get to meet her grandmother, Donna, and her other aunt, Stella, soon.

It’s common for adult females in the herd to assist in raising young elephants until they are considered to be independent, typically around 8 years old.

Weighing in at a whopping 218 pounds, she is already bringing so much joy to the animal care team backstage. We can’t wait to see her out and about on the savanna!

Specialty Care

Nadirah became pregnant through natural breeding in early 2022. Since then, she received special care from Disney’s animal care team for the entirety of her nearly 22-month pregnancy. It takes a team of dedicated cast members to care for a pregnant elephant and eventually, her newborn calf.

Under the expert care of animal keepers, veterinary team and scientists, mother and baby will undergo continued post-natal exams and spend several days bonding. Then, they will join the rest of the herd. During this bonding period, the elephant team is watching for the pair to share key moments like successful nursing and weight gain.
