Ravensburger
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom retired early last year, and we miss having the interactive card game in the park. Now Disney is joining Ravensburger to create a family-friendly collectible trading card game Disney Lorcana.
You may recognize Ravensburger for its popular line of Disney-themed strategy board games and Disney puzzles. Now, Ravensburger says that it wants to take things to the next level with Disney Lorcana.
This [game] is probably the largest potential that Ravensburger has ever gone after, and hence also probably the largest investment that we have ever done into any type of project and initiative.

Disney’s Lorcana
Disney is a major player in theme parks, streaming television, and major motion pictures, but we haven’t seen any Disney cards since Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. However, this game was solely played inside Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park. Disney plans to compete now with Magic: The Gathering and the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
“The basic idea is there’s this place called The Great Illuminary,” said brand manager Ryan Miller, a veteran of Wizards of the Coast who also helped design the gameplay of Disney Lorcana. “It is a treasury of all the Disney songs and stories ever made — all the characters — and it’s where they’re kind of recorded. The players take on this role of an Illumineer — this powerful sorcerer that has the ability to bring these characters to life off the page. [Players will be] bringing a band of their favorite Disney characters together to adventure in this world.”
The collectible game will include a “modern storybook” art style, said North America head of games Cassidy Werner. Shane Hartley, global games creative director, said that it “was inspired by the storybook openings of classic Disney films and features visible line work and vibrant color washes” and “mixes both traditional hand-drawn qualities seen in fairy-tale storybooks with new digital techniques.”
Cards
The first set of cards is set to be released in the fall of 2023: Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter. Each of the seven debut cards include the name of the character, its cost to bring into play, and its statistics for both offense and defense. In addition, each card also includes a special power.
The first set of cards are planned to arrive in late 2023.
Collector Cards Coming Now
The first collector cards for Disney Lorcana debuted yesterday at the D23 convention. They include seven iconic Disney characters. Take a look at these cool cards below, and Mickey is shown above as the Brave Little Tailor.
Players will work to vanish Cruella before she causes havic.
Then, there’s our favorite Disney fox, Robin Hood. I (Susan) love his quote, “We never rob. We just sort of borrow a bit from those who can afford it.”
Next, check out another iconic Disney villain, allowing you to banish other players characters.
Elsa comes equipped with magical ink!
Captain Hook’s description if fitting of this quirky villain. “He loves to make light of a foe’s predicament.”
Last, but not least, Disney includes the playful Stitch in this collection.
What do you think about this new game? Do you think it will compete with other popular trading card games? Or, do you prefer the free Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game? Please share your thoughts in the comments below or on our Facebook page.

My son who has cognitive disabilities loved the interactive game at MK. He won’t understand the new game and wished MK would bring back the interactive game. Sometimes our entire vacation was centered around the game I could use it as a reward for him doing other things with the family. That is gone now very sad

To be fair, the sorcerer game sounds cool, but for people like me who would probably never get a chance to go to Disney world, it kind of sucked that I wouldn’t get a chance to play it. At least this way, I have a chance to enjoy playing a card game with some nostalgic characters and great character IPs.
