On July 12, 2021, Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom welcomed a new baby hippo! She was born in the Safari River on Kilimanjaro Safari to hippopotamus parents Henry and Tuma, who were paired through Disney’s conservation program.

Rumor has it that lucky guests on safari had the experience of being on the attraction when the Cast Member driving their jeep noticed the little hippo had appeared!

The baby animal love was doubled that week. The very next day, a little western lowland gorilla also came into the world, just missing becoming her birthday twin. The little primate received a name recently, and you can read all about it here.

Recently, Disney Parks Blog revealed the baby’s name via Instagram. The little one is called Greta.

It is in keeping with her siblings’ names. She has two older brothers called Hans and Augustus.

If you ask me, this adorable moniker absolutely suits her. It’s a perfect name for a sweet little hippo.

Of course, she won’t stay little for long. Female Nile hippos like Greta reach an average weight of 2,800 pounds.

Where to See Her

Greta and Tamu are doing well. In fact, the pair spends time in the Safari River while guests are present.

So, if you are riding Kilimanjaro Safari any time soon, have your camera ready as you go past the hippos. You might just get a chance to photograph this little baby!

Have you had a chance to see Greta in person? Do you hope to catch a glimpse of her on your next visit? Tell us about it in the comments below or on our Facebook page. Or keep the conversation going and share them with us in our crew, too!
