Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress
There's a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day. And we're hoping that a "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" is exactly what's in store for Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress.
The beloved Carousel of Progress, which showcases vignettes from days gone by, will receive quite an overhaul. The latest rendition of the attraction included storytelling from the turn of the century, the 20s, the 40s, and the 21st century, and fans loved seeing history unfold before their eyes.
Of course, change is nothing new for the Carousel of Progress. It has received multiple updates over the years. The most recent was a wardrobe change for the family in the 21st Century scene in 2022. But what's coming is the biggest update yet!
Changes for Carousel of Progress
The good news is that the ride isn't closing permanently to make way for something new. We aren't losing it the way we lost Rivers of America, Muppet Vision 3D, or Dinosaur.
Disney fans are happy that the Carousel of Progress will still exist in some form. After all, it is one of the remaining Disney attractions that Walt Disney himself had a hand in constructing.
However, some fans still worry that the ride will lose its charm. When its transformation is complete, there will be a new introduction, featuring Walt Disney himself. And there will also be new vignettes from new decades.
Sneak Peek at the Carousel of Progress Changes
If you are a Rover fan, you can breathe a sigh of relief. The sneak peek at D23 showcases the beloved pup! Many assumed he was always safe, but this serves as a nice confirmation.

The display also includes two new costumes for the Carousel of Progress family! One is from the 1960s, which will be Act I of the updated show. The other is from the new Future Scene, which will serve as the fourth and final act.

An update to the Carousel of Progress was long overdue. The jump of more than 50 years between the third and fourth acts was simply too large, and the technology featured in the final act hadn’t been cutting-edge for a very long time.
The original idea was that different generations in the audience could watch together, nod, and say, “Yes, I remember when.” But Gen Xers are now grandparents, and millennials have children heading off to college. Instead of “Oh, yes, I remember that,” the reaction had become, “Whoa—look at all that old-timey stuff.”

I am skeptical. I think Disney lost the plot on the amount of change our society experienced in the 20th Century, driven by advancement in technology. That amount of "progress" was truly breathtaking. We have not seen change like this, even with the advent of the microchip and computers.

It was interesting to me that there came a point in time when the Turn of the Century scene of the attraction held memories that no one living on earth still has. The people who built it preserved those memories, and they lasted even after everyone who was there to see that time with their own eyes was gone. Now it is gone too.
