The first Pirates of the Caribbean attraction opened at Disneyland Park in 1967. It was one of the last attractions Walt personally oversaw the creation of in the 1960s.

It remains one of the most immersive attractions ever created for a theme park! Guests can even dine at the Blue Bayou overlooking the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction while enjoying delicious bayou cuisine.

Both Pirates of the Caribbean and the Blue Bayou closed for refurbishment on May 4, 2026, at Disneyland.

The good news is that Pirates of the Caribbean just reopened at Disneyland. The even better news is that some extra magic is now added to this favorite attraction.

Disney Imagineers debuted a next-generation Audio Animatronic with this pirate skeleton that is seated atop a pile of golden riches.

Guests can see him transform from human form to skeletal remains. Check out this full transformation:

This not only brings a great animatronic to the attraction, but also a new storyline that Imagineers share "the story that's been there all along". Guests will now see the pirate finding a single cursed coin.

Once he picks up the coin, the curse freezes him. After he drops the coin, he becomes unfrozen. We hope this update will also come to Walt Disney World.
