Is This the End of the DeSantis-Controlled Disney World Board?

What would happen if the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District was repealed? That’s what we are hoping to find out as one Florida Senator hopes to reinstate the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Is this the end for Ron DeSantis?

The Reedy Creek Improvement District was the special district Disney created in the 1960’s. Essentially, a 1967 law states that Disney is its own governing body in the two cities and land within Orange and Osceola counties.

However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis threatened Disney World after the company spoke out about his policies. The state repealed this law and overturned the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

The RCID was abolished in the spring of 2023.

In its place, Ron DeSantis appointed board members for the newly-established Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. Now, the state has control over Disney World’s business matters.

Most notably, they have tried to control Disney’s attraction and transportation inspections. In fact, a new report found that Ron DeSantis personally proposed the legislation for these inspections.

Over 30 employees left after this takeover and several more were fired, among claims that the new district harbors a toxic workplace.

Now, one Senator from Florida wants to reinstate the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Senator Linda Stewart is preparing a bill that would terminate the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.

“The offices and terms of all members of the Board of Supervisors of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District existing as of the effective date of this act shall end as of the effective date of this act, but such members may continue to serve until a successor in office is appointed and qualified.”

If the bill passes, this would have huge ramifications for both Disney World and Ron DeSantis. Of course, Disney would be the winner of this fight as they would gain control again.

It would not affect the current federal “free speech” lawsuit between the company and the state. We will keep an eye on this bill and provide any updates for you.
