Commercials Added to All Disney+ Accounts, Even for Ad Free Subscribers

What do you think of these ads even for the more expensive "Commerical-Free Tier"?

Disney first announced various subscription tiers back in September 2022. The overall idea that Disney first proposed was that this could offer Disney+ to a larger group of subscribers with differing price points. Of course, the ad-supported Disney+ tier would be cheaper.

Earlier this month, commercial-free Disney+ increased in price to $13.99 per month from the previous $11 a month. This 27% increase took effect on September 6, 2023. Disney+ with ads remain at $7.99 per month.

Bob Iger shares that 40% of new Diseny+ subscribers are choosing the ad-supported subscription.

Last night, subscribers across all Disney+ tiers were shown Disney+ ads for the premiere of Dancing With the Stars. Last year, Dancing With the Stars moved exclusively to Disney+. This was Disney+'s first-ever live series!

This was received with mixed reactions, and this year it will now also air on ABC as well. That's right, Dancing With the Stars will now live-stream on both ABC and Disney+. This new change enters into unchartered waters on Disney+. Last season, when Dancing With the Stars live-streamed exclusively on Disney+ it did so with no commercials or ads.

Now that it live streams simultaneously with ABC, Disney+ subscribers along all subscription tiers were shown ads. On Disney+ what would air as local ads on ABC were replaced with Disney+ ads for upcoming releases such as Haunted Mansion and Loki.

After the live broadcast, Dancing With the Stars will be available to stream on Disney+. For subscribers with the "commercial-free" tier, the ads will no longer be shown. This is new for Disney+, but if you are paying more to skip commercials on Disney+ you will want to wait until after the live broadcast of Dancing With the Stars.

Now that Dancing With the Stars live streams simultaneously with ABC, Disney+ subscribers along all subscription tiers were shown ads.

What do you think of this new live broadcast option on Disney+? Do you prefer to pay more to skip the Disney+ commercials and ads? Share your thoughts with us and share this news with your Disney+ streaming pals.

  1. I'm with you! Absolutely cannot stand ads. Period. I spent a hour or more online with a Disney "support tech" who apparently didn't realize that even for the top-tier subscribers (Disney+ Premium) the ads would still come through. The fool kept trying to blame it on me, insinuated that I must be logged on to a non-premium account--right, down right insulting.

  2. There's a very separate distinction between ads commercials and in-house programming promotional content. Like many stated, I don't like commercials, but I do like promos since it tells me about an upcoming program event. And they are limited in terms of time. So it's okay in my book and entertaining. You used to pay for a movie ticket, get entertaing trailers which are theatre inhouse promotion, promos and no commercials except for "let's go to lobby" promos. Now commercials are common in theaters, since they are a revenue stream which helps the theater keep its doors open.

  3. In other news, I'll never pay a streamer AND watch ads.

No thanks. If I wanted that I'd watch free broacast tv.

Paramount has been doing this for some time. Unskippable ads for their own content before every show. That content that I'm either already watching or decided I don't want to watch.

I don't sub to them anymore, and my disney sub expires next month. I won't renew.

The price increases were enough. I'll just sub monthly once a year to see whatever paltry new content that they have.

  4. Amazon Prime Video is starting ads on their service next month. $3 more gets you an ad-free experience. As if Prime wasn't already expensive enough. Every service is raising its prices and/or adding ads onto its "ad-free" tier. Time to cancel all of them.

  5. It was a shock but it somewhat has to be done. It is a LIVE show, so when the commercial breaks are playing on ABC it would either be dead space on the Disney+ app. Which could have led to a LOT of tech support calls when nothing was really wrong.
Plus this way you have breaks so you're not missing anything.

  6. I dont pay anything and would NEVER pay anything for ad supported junk. I have the Disney plus , hulu ESPN thing courtesy of verizon... if I didn't, I wouldn't use it .
I dont watch anything with ads period.
They should be paying me to watch if it contains ads.

  7. dancing with the stars must be really popular even though i have never heard of it. Nor am i interested. But they dropped that awful version of the little mermaid this month...but did release awesome ashoka..such a mixed bag. if they had ads on everything i tell you i would watch nothing on it...and i barely watch anything on it now.
