Disney Movies Based on Attractions

It is no secret that one thing Disney has capitalized on is the idea of creating films based on beloved theme park attractions. Of course, some of these like Pirates of the Caribbean are wildly popular and successful.

Others do not fare nearly as well like the first Haunted Mansion movie. We are still pulling for the latest Haunted Mansion movie to pick up some steam after a disappointing opening weekend since it was pretty good. See the review here.

However, in the midst of all this Haunted Mansion buzz, talk has emerged surrounding the possibility of a remake for an extinct Disney attraction that is gone, but certainly NOT forgotten. And I (Katie) am hoping it all pans out!

Captain EO

If you are a long-time Disney fan, then Captain EO needs no introduction. But, for some of you who have only recently discovered the magic of Disney, Captain EO is the stuff of legends of the past.

Captain EO is a 1986 3D Sci-Fi Live-Action Short starring Michael Jackson and Anjelica Huston. It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and written by George Lucas.

Guests could experience it in EPCOT in Walt Disney World until 1998. The attraction returned in 2010, and no one has seen it since 2015. It also had runs in Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Tokyo Disneyland.

The 17 minutes short tells the story of Captain EO and the unusual crew of creatures on his spaceship, which includes a flying orange kitten-type thing called Fuzzball. They are on a mission involving a strange and colorless planet and its Supreme Leader.

Things are going well until they are captured by henchmen and sentenced to be turned into trash cans. However, the Crew has ways of getting out of trouble. Their methods primarily involve a Michael Jackson musical number complete with the finest choreography the 1980s had to offer.

As you can imagine, the show has a multitude of fans who would dearly love to see it again and again. And, that MIGHT just be possible.

Captain EO Movie Talk

Recently, in an interview with Screenrant, Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien was ready to talk about what he wants to direct next in terms of bringing Disney attractions to the silver screen. And, his heart is set on a film adaptation of Captain EO.

During the Comic-Con interview, Simien said, “Captain EO, let’s go! Listen, I know it is out of commission, okay? I know that’s not technically a ride, but I am ready. I need some singing and I need some dancing and I need some Jerry curl juice in outer space immediately.”

Dear, Disney. PLEASE, make Captain EO happen! Something tells me that a film based on this epic 1980s short would be the stuff nostalgic dreams are made of for an entire generation of people. Plus, it would surely entertain a whole new wave of audiences! Even better, perhaps a film could mean a resurgence of the attraction!

Are you on board with a Captain EO movie adaptation? Do you hope that this idea turns into more than just talk? Let us know in the comments. And, be sure to pass this story along to everyone you know who would love to see a Captain EO resurgence.
