An Avatar Announcement

Today, James Cameron himself joined D23 virtually from New Zealand to update fans on the status of the franchise. During the update, he announced that filming had begun for the 4th installment of Avatar.

The fact that the fourth film is already underway is a HUGE vote of confidence on the part of the franchise. After all, the second film hasn’t even hit theatres. Having a 3rd and 4th installment seems to assume that audiences will respond well to the second film. Of course, this could be a safe bet based on the original’s track record with earnings of some $2.8 billion.

Let’s back up to the first sequel: Avatar: The Way of Water. This film is set to hit theatres in Late December. Based on the footage guests at D23 were treated to (in 3D), it sounds as if the movie will focus on Jake and Neytiri and their family. It also sounds like the underwater scenes are especially impressive, particularly in 3D.

D23 revealed some concept art for the new film. It depicts an underwater scene along with flora and fauna created for the world of Pandora.

For those who can’t quite recall the first film, a refresher is available soon. Avatar is returning to theatres on  September 23, 2022. This will give movie goers plenty of time to experience it for the first time or for the first time in forever ahead of Avatar: Journey of Water’s release.
