How fun is this photo opportunity at the Magic Kingdom?! Here is how I got it!

Special Photo Opportunities

I (Monica) love getting photos throughout the Disney World theme parks. They make great keepsakes and remind me of special moments shared with family and friends!

Even better is when Disney offers special opportunities that turn those photos into something even more magical! During Epcot’s Festival of the Arts, the popular light wand trick always has long lines. Of course, the lantern prop used in the Magic Kingdom is always a popular spot as well!

There are plenty of Magic Shot opportunities, but these more rare and unique photos can be hard to come by. But, I recently spotted one I have never seen before!

Bokeh Photo Opportunity

This unique photo opportunity, called bokeh, is an out-of-focus blur on lights that appears as shapes in either a background or foreground. The trick is the way the photographer focuses on the subject while the lights are out of focus.

Let’s see it in action!

During a late evening at the Magic Kingdom this past week, I happened upon this fun photo opportunity. I know Disney will occasionally do these special photos for holidays or festivals, so it was interesting that we saw it during a regular night. Perhaps they are training for 4th of July photos like they did in 2019 (pictured above).

Anyway, there were quite a few PhotoPass photographs at this location along with someone who looked like a manager. A few minutes later, another photographer came by, so I really think this is some kind of training taking place for the upcoming holiday.

How the photo works

As you can see in the photo above, the Mickey-shaped lights are strung on this stand with some space in between. There is just enough room for up to three people to get in a shot with the bokeh on both sides. One or two people will have no problem, but three people may be a bit more difficult for photographers.

While watching, I noticed anytime three people were in the photo, the photographer needed to try several times to get a good photo. You will need to squeeze close together and everyone will need to be on the same level. This may require taller people to bend down to the height of shorter people.

The PhotoPass photographer will focus on the subject’s face (that’s you!) while the lights are out of focus. The result is a truly fantastic and unique photo. I found this opportunity at Magic Kingdom in Fantasyland. It is near Pinocchio’s Village Haus towards the bathrooms. If you look in my photo above, you can kind of see Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel on the right side all lit up.

The photos showed up almost immediately in the My Disney Experience app, and if you have Memory Maker as part of your tickets or annual pass it is free!
