Disney Imagineer Kevin Rafferty has had a magical career! Throughout his time with Walt Disney Imagineering, he designed, wrote, and created some of the most iconic attractions and areas of the Disney Parks. Today, we are learning that this incredible Imagineer’s time with Walt Disney will be coming to an end soon.

The seasoned Imagineer announced today that he will be retiring from the Walt Disney Company. After 42 years of magic, he has decided that it is time for a much needed rest!

He announced his retirement date of April 1, 2021 in a memo to staff.

Rafferty spoke to D23 about his time with the Walt Disney Company. He started as a dishwasher in Disneyland, and was able to work us way up through the company.

Rafferty helped design and create some of the most iconic parts of the Disney theme parks. Rafferty influenced Cars Land, Toy Story Midway Mania, Mickey’s Philharmagic, Test Track, and many, many others.

‘When i started, there were only two disney parks in the world. it’s really been my honor, my pleasure, and my joy to be around and watch the expansion of the magic that walt Disney imagineering has made. i’ve been there for all of that. it’s been an amazing ride.”

His most recent career triumph is Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. After that, he felt as though his journey had reached it’s peak.

He certainly is going out at the top of his game!

Kevin Rafferty leaves some advice behind for inspiring Imagineers: “to any young Imagineer, I would tell them, ‘You are absolutely here for a reason. It’s no coincidence. You’re here. Now get to work. Make the magic. Make people happy. And don’t you ever, ever take a day of it for granted.

Disney is losing some great Imagineers this year! We also recently learned Disney Imagineer Joe Rhode has retired after many many years of Magic with the Walt Disney Company as well.
