Weather Forecast Discussion

The big story this weekend will be a strong late-season cold front moving through Florida.  We’ll have one more day of unseasonably warm temperatures on Friday, along with the chance for a few scattered showers and thunderstorms.

You can see the Saturday morning surface map below with the front approaching from the northwest.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely on Saturday, some with heavy downpours.  I’ll also be keeping an eye on the severe threat Friday and Saturday with the front moving through.  More on that threat below.

With the front moving through, it will be breezy Saturday and Sunday.  Behind the front much cooler air will filter in for late Saturday and Sunday.  Highs will struggle to get out of the 60’s on Sunday but will rebound to the 70’s for Monday.

Severe Weather Chances For Florida

After a relatively quiet period in recent weeks, we now have a severe threat to monitor for Friday and Saturday. The main severe threat should be across the panhandle on Friday, however an isolated severe storm is possible on Friday in Central Florida.

Remember, any thunderstorm can produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours.

As the image above indicates, Saturday looks to be the better chance for severe weather in the Orlando area. NOAA Storms Prediction Center has Orlando right in the middle of the slight risk as the cold front meets the warm, moist air in place in Florida.

The best chance will be Saturday late-morning to early afternoon as a line of storms moves across the state. Be sure to keep an eye out for any warnings, and follow any cast member directions for seeking shelter.

Flight Impacts

I added this category recently to point out any large-scale impacts on flights getting to and from Orlando. The struggles and impacts on the airline industry in the wake of the pandemic that led to flight cancellations have been well-documented. I’m focusing on the weather impacts.

The large storm system that will bring rain, snow, and potential severe weather will have impacts on flights this weekend. On Friday, expect delays in the Ohio Valley and along the gulf coast. Saturday we could see delays along most of the Eastern Seaboard as low pressure and the strong cold front make it to the coast.

In terms of Orlando-area airports, some minor delays are possible on Friday with showers and thunderstorms. We could see more impactful delays on Saturday with potential severe weather and windy conditions behind the front.

A Look Ahead

An early look at next week shows another system moving across the Southeast U.S. that will bring the chance of showers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will be more seasonable in the 70’s.
